Zimbra? It's been a while (two years) since I've used it and it was reasonably simple to set up even then. I can only imagine it'd be easier now.

IMAP is a mailbox access protocol. Simply put, everything stays on the server and clients sync instead of downloading what's new like with POP

Run dovecot under linux, pop3/imap setup was pretty easy, supports imaps/pops too if you can be bothered with SSL. Exim as an mta, probably need securing from the default in most distros tho

If you prefer windows, can't beat exchange server!

so yeah, i decided that instead of poking at my horde of email accounts, i'd go for something that would collect mail from all of my accounts. i could do this by setting forwarders on all of them, pointing to one account, but that's very boring!

running dovecot, fetchmail and postfix on fedora 13. it looks like it might work with some love, but fetchmail is being a slut, telling me it can't send to [email protected] i guess this is probably a problem with postfix, dunno how to unfuck it though

config looks like this -
poll myserver proto pop3 [email protected] with password fuckyou is me here

it connects fine, finds a bunch of mail, but says it can't send to [email protected] halp?

dovecot config is default, with mail_location set to mbox:~/Mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u

postfix seems to start ok, but when checking status, it says master dead but pid file exists. maybe i can use something other than postfix? dunno how to make fetchmail use whatever alternative i use (probably sendmail?) in that case. dont even know if it's trying to use postfix at all now, or whether i get to choose

fetchmail will just deliver to the local MTA, you can only have one MTA installed. Debian / ubuntu install exim by default iirc which should deliver locally at least but nay need osme tweaks to deliver to maildir folders which i think dovecot uses (least thats what I have running on my box as its more flexible than mbox). Dunno about other distros, but on debian just apt-get install sendmail or whatever and it'll remove the old.

To get your mta setup right use something like mailx to just send mail locally, it'll save you removing mail from your hosts

To send outbound you'll need to configure your mta to deliver non-local mail to your ISP or hosts mailrelay to send outbound
