Boston marathon bombing

2 separate bombs at the end of the Boston Marathon; no reports of deaths yet but that is bound to change. Dozens of injuries. Looking pretty grim.

And quite a chilling video of the second explosion...

Horrific one of a guy being carried around with just his bone protruding from his leg.. Everything else has been blown away.

It's all very sad but similar things are happening in Iraq and Syria every day. The whole link to Newtown makes me wonder if it's republican nutters like McVeigh or Kaczynski

Thought the same thing tbh. Even if it was Al'Qaeda, you can bet your arse the pro-gun supporters will be out in force claiming that they need their guns to protect themselves from the TUHRRORISTS.

Video of the first bombing reminds me of opening sequence of Die Hard 3

But what it really shows is the lack of training for a critical incident response plan from the Boston police department.

More likely to blame North Koreans at the moment as the US government has openly changed their stance to look for peace rather than war...
And we all know the intelligence agencies, military and foreign office have all previously looked for war over peace to generate money and public support.

I think that looks more likely right now... by now Al Qaeda would have claimed responsibility as they have in the past. Their MO has always been a suicide bomber to inflict maximum casualties, it looks like this time round it was abandoned packages/devices.

Perhaps this was the missile test North Korea have been promising!

This suggests a homemade claymore set at low level., hardly something major terrorist groups would use.
With reports of an 8 year olds death this would support the low level attack.

Someone's out to make a point without causing maximum death toll

Honestly what the hell are you blithering about. You've gone from blaming North Korea to discounting IED use by terrorists and saying a bomb at a packed finish line isn't there to cause the most damage it could.

Edit - TWO bombs in fact.

^Not quite as often as being told how scared we should be or how we should accept further surveillance and so on. Not often enough, in other words.

...although you're being a bit disingenuous there; not everyone in the US will have lost a leg from this, but the panic stirred up by the media and subsequent rhetoric is more the target of that article.

CNN confirming majority of injurys caused by ball bearings, some fucker went out of his to make this as lethal as possible and specifically to kill people rather then damage property. My thoughts go out to those who have lost loved ones and suffered injuries for there sake I hope they bring those responsible justice with expedience.

Wasn't there talk of it being packed with shotgun shells? That would explain the ball bearings but frankly any old crap from the shed packed around an explosive would do the trick.

You don't see many of these stirring articles before or between such events do you? Rather they consistently get trotted out in a crass imitation of op-ed right after such events by people who have no actual analysis to offer yet hold a strong desire for readership.

I'll believe it was packed with jelly tots before I convince myself some bloke who knocked up a few kilos of explosives in his bathtub then went out and did a string of yield tests to ensure that he "made a point without causing maximum death toll".

Rot.

Jelly tots would have had a more napalmy quality assuming they weren't totally atomised by the explosion. I think jelly babies with their thicker top layer would be a better choice for treacle terror... or tins of treacle.

It does reek of Cletus and Jethro though.

I haven't blamed anyone. I said "more likely to blame NK" not implying I would blame them, rather the US would finger point.

I didn't discount IED, I said the nature of injury and height of attack suggests its a APM type device.

Does NK even have a track record of doing anything nasty outside its borders? Except contested land and sea borders and criminally poor Olympic prowess.

By and large perhaps. To answer your second point, I'd argue that Schneier is of more worth than most. But he does also write about the politics of fear in between such events, not just in the immediate aftermath. Curtis is another.

No but every time the US have an attack on their home soil they feel the urge to war against the country in which the bomber was born.

I'll tell you what's not being backed up there. Anything you said. It/they was a mobile phone and a lump of something nasty wrapped in bits of metal like every other damn bomb that's ever gone off in public and was probably sat in a bin like Atlanta. Explosions cause more damage laterally because the shockwave impacts perpendicular to the targets. Any further assumptions are beyond guesswork at the moment let alone engaging in some kind of bizarre acronym semantics.

The cunts, whomever they are, were interested in maximum carnage and coverage. Any moderation was quite clearly accidental.
