In response to the Dow fall, the ftse 100 is estimated to open 250+ points lower in the morning. Fun times ahead.

Asian markets took a battering overnight. FTSE is indeed down 250 points in early trading.

Whilst it’s a big drop and people are wary, I don’t think it’s significant long term. Weirdly it’s been caused by positive economic outlooks for a change.

If it is bad long term at least we have crpyto... oh wait.

Assange has been told he's still getting nicked for skipping bail, if the opportunity arises. I don't know why he thought the outcome would be anything else.

Maybe he's going for the insanity plea.

Ironically it does practically everywhere bar the UK. I don't think we have any statutes of limitation at all on serious crimes

This was good from Kate Andrews on yesterday's This Week on why, despite the nonsense we continually hear about it being the envy of the world, the NHS is actually a bit pants:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p05xktqy

Also worth watching the discussion between her and Anna Soubry and Alan Johnson on iPlayer after this segment, as it was a painful demonstration of why the NHS will never be fixed when the sole response is seemingly 'it's unique and special and you won't understand unless you're British'.

It’s a bit hard to fix something when it’s having it’s assets stripped and budgets taken away (where’s that £350m a week?)

The NHS is fantastic, it’s a shame successive Tory governments have gutted it to the point it now needs fixing.

If we could fix social care the NHS might well be be fine.

I cannot think of a single free marketplace where being the largest purchaser doesn't result in a better deal.

Itís almost impossible to have a meaningful conversation about change in the NHS, the latest hyperbolic bullshit about ACOs is just another example of that.

Its alright and pretty cheap for what it does (though I suspect the direct comparisons are hard). Generally the German and French systems are better (though filled with evil private top ups) and if I ever got seriously ill I'd much rather be a working yank statistically.

It's a fantastic idea, but it's not fantastically executed. The stats show that - waiting times, cancer survival rates etc. - which are all worse than many developed country counterparts. It's not just the Tories, it's the cross party dogma surrounding the NHS that is killing it.

There is no quick finger pointing or blame with the NHS, the system has a number of significant and deep challenges that are so enormous that fixing them requires successive governments to commit to the problem. Given the current chasm between Labour and the Tories, I doubt that will be repaired any time soon.

Simply pouring in more billions is not the answer, but neither is the American Insurance based system.

The core principle of the NHS is correct, care, free at the point of need. The delivery is challenged.

I wouldn't quite say it'll "fix" the NHS, but I tend to agree with Lung that making significant progress on integrated social and primary care would make a big difference. That's a huge challenge that requires sustained political focus and for various power brokers to loosen their grip.

Best reduction in mortality in the last decade of the 11 nations though. The fact the UK scores so well in the rest of the study suggests that it isn't as terrible as the IEA shill suggests, and again, with Social Care being sorted the NHS could be fine.

There are loads of things you could do with the NHS, retaining the overall principle but improving efficiency.

Most elective surgery for example I'd be outsourcing to eastern Europe
Explicit rather than hidden use of private insurance for improved services.
Explicitly prioritise based on pay back openly (if only for the fun and games and moral discussions )

For all it's improvements the NHS still has "a poor record of keeping people alive", which I'll concede isn't the whole story, but it's probably worth acknowledging as a smidgeon of a failing.

It's a bit unfair to describe Kate Andrews as an IEA shill, I thought she was pretty good on the programme.

She certainly defeated the mighty pairing of Johnson and Soubry who seemed utterly unprepared.

Nice balanced show from the BBC by the way, Neil (a Tory), Soubry (a Tory), Andrews (right wing, presumably Tory) and Johnson (Red Tory).
