Would that be when you asked for scifo books but said you don't like scifi books that are a bit hard?

Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick

Great read, I love alternative history novels

Well yes, but Honsingers stuff is just WW2 in space, not bad, but not special . The expanse stuff is genuinely well constructed as a realistic future setting with a good mystery storyline.

In terms of paper (yes I'm a luddite) then I'm on "john dies at the end" which is good 6/10 for being a bit different and pretty funny/.

I think Leviathan Wakes goes a little bit Stephen King at the end, going from gritty low fantasy scifi to excessive high fantasy scifi at the end. So its more 4 stars rather than 5 I think

Still at least there aren't two fighting space monsters like King would write.

The Necronomicon by H.P. Lovecraft

I'm assuming he's referring to the collection of his stories http://www.amazon.co.uk/Necronomicon.../dp/0575081562

I've got it and for that price, it's a pretty good bargain.

Yeah, not that specific book, but its basically just a collection of everything he wrote. Call of Cthulu and the Herbert West stories have been particular highlights so far.

Nah Im reading all of it. Im sick of seeing the term "Lovecraftian influence" and not knowing what the fuck that means, other than anything Cthulu related. So time to learn what it ALL means.

I like the short stories most. The Music of Eric Zahn is one of my faves.

I have a few of the radio shows of his if anyone is interested, Shadow over Innsmouth, Mountains of Madness.

Non-fiction, but "America's War for the Greater Middle East" is brilliant and very readable. Draws a line from Iran in the 70s to the present situation, through Somalia, Kosovo and a whole host of other wars and interventions along the way.

I have read it, it is excellent. I am yet to read the long war or the long universe yet.

I've started working may way through some indy fantasy authors hoping to rekindle my slightly jaded enthusiasm for the genre.

To Ride Hell's Chasm by Janny Wurts is the first book on this and it has started out decent enough, though the heraldry and court intrigue is trite. The parts of her book written away from the court are really good so far though.

Just started the Ravenor series of Warhammer 40K books.

Alison picked them up from a charity shop and read them last week. Never read any of the 40K books, and I'm only half way through the first, but I'm enjoying it.

I finished the Janny Wurts book. It was OK, but not the most complex of books. As is the wont of a lot of epic fantasy writers, the repetition of specific phrases or ideas (GRR Martin's obsession with people eating in his books anyone?) did start to grate. It was a standalone so everything got wrapped up with nice finished endings which both satisfies and jars (as nothing in real life is wrapped up as well). I'd say it's worth a read if you are bored or a particular fantasy fiction fan, but otherwise probably not worth it.

Currently reading The Black Wolves by Kate Elliott. I've got about a quarter of the way through. So far it is truly excellent.

Good place to start i think they might just be about the best written of the lot - but its probably easily debatable and my memory is poor
