It’s not particularly. I think the East Coast franchise may turn out to be the biggest point here.

See, again, this is where both sides differ. It's apparent that gov't is breaking down in the last 18 months, and whether you agree with brexit or not, surely you can see it's been double plus ungood by and large due to the chaos that bad leadership has wrought?

The chap wanted Andrew Neil sacked from the BBC for being "pro-Brexit", amongst other things such as comparing Brexit to Hitler and the sinking of the Titanic. All a little histrionic and makes his recent claim that the government have been silencing him quite amusing. He's a capable chap but Brexit has clearly made him quite mad.

Brexit was always divisive and its proper delivery would cause disagreements within parties - take Labour, for instance, who between themselves can't agree on the form of Brexit they would pursue. This wouldn't have gone away post-referendum and this isn't necessarily a sign of the government breaking down but of a highly contentious issue. The recent election has done more to hamper deliverability, so I'd somewhat agree with the claim of 'breaking down' in the last 6 months, but this is very much what happens with minority governments I'm afraid and they typically limp on.

Note that it's divisive because it's quite obviously a shit idea.

The negotiations about the future will not be straightforward. They will generate the same public thunder and lightning that we have seen in the past year. But I believe they will be successful, because the future of the Europe continent is best served by strong and successful relationships.
Several important points being glossed over by David Davis, including the fact that some of the EU is held together by the fear that leaving would screw over any country that chose to do so. If the UK gets a good deal, other countries may well try to follow suit, and that absolutely, categorically, cannot be allowed.

The EU is fundamentally unable to give the UK a good deal.

Does anyone here think that they will manage to get anything resembling a deal done by October?

A transition deal whereby we effectively continue the status quo for another two years should be very doable by October.

Those last two were my parents. I can only apologise. They are not the sharpest tools in the box. My mum's reason "Because Cameron didn't send those rapists back to their own country because the UN wouldn't let him!" The UN. My dad's reason: "They were going to let the Turks in!"

"paid to plant meadows" is all I need to see from today's Govelarity to achieve full comedy climax.

Gove’s speech was pretty sensible and I’m sure he’d have preferred the headline to focus more on reallocating money that currently goes to the CAP (and the wealthiest land owners) to things which offer wider public benefits.

Yep but just as an aside a meadow is what happens when you don't plant anything.

I haven’t seen the exact wording he used but I suspect he’ll have advocated cultivated woodland or such like. Anyway, expect no one on the Tory side to point out that they opposed / vetoed a cap on subsidy payments a year or so ago.

He decries and aims to replace a scheme that essentially rewards land ownership with one that rewards not farming land. He's been turned over.

Planting some fucking trees might help. Especially in water catchments.

But it probably makes sense to reward landowners to not farm land (or at least maintain it in a way that’s environmentally sustainable).

We've made the first move. It would surprise me if other countries follow, regardless of how difficult they try and make it. The continent is crying for change imo.

Couldn't we do something far better like stop all payments over £X to landowners and set aside the funds to just buy it outright?

Stopping rich people rent seeking off the government is something I think for once most people here will be in agreement on (ok maybe that's new year optimism )

You want the state to compel landowners to sell land for a pittance given that it's without standing planning permission.
