Broken laptop

Ok so this could turn in to a massive post, so I’m going to attempt to keep it short and sweet.

Friend gives me a laptop – symptoms are random BSOD’s hard drive errors and failed recovery using the Sony suite. Hard Drive test failed in BIOS and third party tool.

I initially diagnosed faulty hard drive due to the recovery failing at various points, with an unable to read image error. Replacement hard drive put in, however recovery still fails (either directly from hard drive or from disk) and I’m unable to copy the recovery DVD in my PC as it gives a ‘Bad image’ error. (Assumed dead HD + bad ‘recovery’ disk)

Attempted to install using XP OEM CD + her key. Kept throwing up unable to copy file errors during XP install, but finally installed. However we then started getting random BIOS errors and XP hanging on load.

Assumed that this could be a dodgy DVD drive (due to the read errors), so have replaced this and reinstalled – still received unable to copy file errors. So in a last ditch attempt have put in some temp RAM from another laptop and installed again.

Seems to be stable so far, however I’m unsure whether I believe that dodgy RAM could cause unable to read /copy errors? Anyone else encountered this? Or have other suggestions?

I’m going to run a full RAM test tonight on the old stuff, but wanted a third opinion.

just what exactly do you think RAM does ?

Work that one out, then explore the ramifications (pun intended) of dodgy stuff

had similar, random bsod, couldn't solve it, sometimes wouldn't get passed bios, othertimes fine for a day or two.

tried both windows and 3rd party mem test apps, 3rd party would be fine everytime, windows would occasionally show a prob, re-ran, fiddled, managed to narrow it down to a faulty stick and could test and get it to cause the test to crash. Sent back mem, new sticks solved all issues.

Mem test is a free easy start to checking your system without having to buy/swop any hardware

these things are often ram related, how do you think overheating the ram makes this happen.

also if could have been something about the HDD ATA controller or a overheating south bridge perhaps?

Looks like you've found the culprit though, one of the first things you need to check tbh

I though RAM or HDD as soon as I'd read the first couple of lines.

Had similar issues loads of times, usually turns out to be one or the other.

Just to echo DizMatts post, I've had several HP laptops displaying the same problem and it turned out to be a faulty HDD controller (Which means new mobo)

If its working now then the RAM was the problem

Cheers for the Posts guys! Glad I'm not the only one that had this, thought I was going nuts when I was running out of parts to replace.

I understand what RAM does and have had dogdy sticks before, however none that have displayed symptoms quite like these, hence the reason for asking what was obviously a very simple question.
