New Builds (Performance / Enthusiast level, must be quiet)

Right, I have decided that it is time to upgrade my creaking i5-2500k / twin 6970 X-fired system

What I don't need:

* SSD - I have a 1TB Samsung EVO
* HDDs - plenty of other storage kicking around internal and external
* Prettiness. I like decent cable management options on a case so that it isn't an arse to take apart at a later date, but I don't give a fuck whether my parts are colour coded. This also means windows in the side of my case are really not particularly necessary.
* To worry about budget too much. I have bought a GTX 1080. I want this thing to last me as long as this last computer has (which was about 5 years with a couple of interim upgrades). Therefore I am willing to spend now to ensure this longevity of use. Thinking of spending 1500ish (on top of what I paid for the GTX 1080) but that isn't a hard limit
* Any sound bits. These will come from the old PC.

What I do need:

* As mentioned, quietness. I've got severely bored of the hum of overly powerful CPU, PSU and GFX fans. Options here would be most appreciated. I have heard of all in one water coolers but as soon as i looked at buying one I was severely confused so if anyone has seen guides about what size of radiator plate I need etc., that would be appreciated. Also I have seen some water coolers that still have fans. What gives? Quiet is a top priority.
* A new monitor to justify that GFX card (hence the still sizeable rough budget). I have an ageing 1080p monitor which would be the limiting factor in the graphics stakes by the time I have finished. I would like G sync and high frame-rates before 4K but if the holy trifecta has been developed, please do tell.
* New monitor should be mountable on a VESA mount, or not have a stupid looking stand like some of the current gen of monitors do.
* A new case. The current one is an utter dust trap. Removing as many fans as possible from the equation should help, but still.
* RAM - future proof if possible? DDR4-3200? Is 1 8GB stick enough for the moment with expansion slots to add more later? This is purely for gaming, I don't envisage needing to run a hyper v cluster.
* Mobo - onboard sound, onboard gfx desirable for trouble shooting, well designed for putting things together, plenty of USB3 connectors, reliable, etc.. Should be able to SLI in the future if I wish.
* Should probably get a new OS. I lost my win7 serial in an upgrade a while ago and I have been surviving with SLMGR / REARM and the occasional regedit from safemode. Nothing I have seen about Windows 10's data collection / advertising antics make me particularly want it but willing to be persuaded otherwise if there are advantages to it. DirectX?

TL;DR but CPU closed circuit cooler yes - don't bother with a double radiator though unless you're clocking. Spend money on two good case fans (top extract and rad/rear) and spend some time in the fan manager of your mobo making it not retarded. Good PSU's come silent now anyway.

I have a NZXT Kraken on my CPU, and whilst not the dearest CPU liquid cooler, its very very quiet. I cant hear the fan at all.

Have a look at the Be Quiet! cases. They come with or without windows and are very quiet and with dust filters on them.

You should consider a PCI-e M.2 SSD as well with that kind of rig. An extra 100 isn't going to hurt for the fastest boot drive available. Something like the Samsung SM951.

The Asus motherboards really don't justify their daft price. 1200w PSU is a monster. Don't sli your 1080, flog your current one and add the cash to the price of the second one to get a 1080ti/1180 or whatever. For the case I'd go for a Fractal R5 or NZXT H440.

The optical and SSD came out of the old machine. The optical already made my life easier getting the NIC working from the mobo drivers CD so it stays for the times when it really is just the easiest option - until manufacturers start sending out drivers on USB sticks probably

The mobo was just north of 160 on a deal on Amazon when I bought it and I got same day delivery which did come into account for my buying decision also.

This is all already bought, I'm not changing case now! I like plain looking cases so NZXT can suck my dick. Fractal r5 looks good but also looks like a midi tower. I've gone from midi to full ATX and I am really glad I did. Makes cable management so much easier.

Photoshop is one of the few places you will see benefit from an i7 if you fancy adjusting to fit that in. Any specific thinking for going with the rx 480 over the gtx 1060? Anything you can salvage from your old build to help with the budget?

My old build is a 5 year old Dell Studio XPS AMD hexcore and appears to run on a combination of noise, luck and dust. I've got a 250MB SSD that I could salvage which will potentially save a few quid and the need to buy another OS but I probably won't. The graphics and RAM are too outdated to be of any use.

i7, m.2 SSD and an nvidia gfx card wld be things I wld massively recommend. Out of the 3, i would prob have m.2, although i7 always been beast for me.

What monitor do you have, and are you likely to upgrade it soon? If it has freesync or you're likely to upgrade to one with freesync soon, then the 480 is ok, otherwise go for the cheapest 6gb 1060 they have. I'll have a fiddle with their configurererer.

e: swap the ram over to the Corsair LPX 3000mhz. It's pricier but faster. If you don't want to bother with faster ram then you might as well go for an H170 build and a cheaper 6500 or 6600.

Not sure why, but if I put your build in I get the total as 1129 without an OS.

I'd probably go for the Z170-A over the -E, better onboard audio and a few other things for a small price change.

Corsair RX PSUs are the dogs', but their CX aren't so hot. It's not in stock but the EVGA supernova 550w GS would be a better option imo.

I've got a couple to choose from. One's a dated Samsung pebble of some description and the other is a Samsung HD TV/Monitor. Both are at least 5 years old so unlikely to have any fancy gubbins.
