PC Crashing

Every now and then my PC crashes. No warnings, no specific applications in use, etc.

When I say it crashes, I mean no BSOD, seemingly no errors in the windows log and no obvious cause. It just freezes, the sound gets stuck in a loop and it stays like that for several seconds. It then restarts and boots back into Windows.

Im suspecting CPU, but would welcome any other input.

No game in particular. Crashes while I'm using the web browser. Sometimes I can get about 10 crashes a day, sometimes I can get through a day without a single crash. It's very very random.

Spec is:

Intel core i7
32gb ram
2x 225gb (ish? I forgrt) ssds in raid 0
Asus 780 ti graphics.
850w corsair power supply.

There's also 3 hdds connected but I can't see it being that.

Oh and while I remember, the screen goes black when it crashes. It doesn't just freeze the picture or show any kind of distortion. Just black screen and the back light in the monitor stays on whilst the last millisecond of sound plays on a loop until it restarts.

Done a memtest booted off a USB stick? Probably the first thing I'd try.

By the sounds of things I'd check Memory (memtest86 boot disk), HDD (i use badblocks in linux), PSU (a multimeter) in that order. It sounds like it is memory though.

Gfx card is easy to check, if it starts drawing graphics wrong then your card has melted.

My guess is that its the GFx card starting to go on you, my old one locked in a similar way infrequently and indeed the last time... was the last time

you could try the integrated graphics to find out

To be fair, memory was my initial thought, but I flipped to CPU based on some of its more recent behaviour (slowdowns and shall we say "erratic" behaviour during a video encoding session). Ill rip two DIMMs out at random now and see how it plays.

90% certain it isnt graphics card. Thats been behaving itself. Also fairly happy its not the SSDs, theyre stupidly fast and ultimately reliable.

Well that was quick. Its certainly not the first set of DIMMs

*edit* Good start. Seems to both POST and boot a lot quicker with the 2nd set of DIMMs. Using the opposing slots of course.

Similar, yet different crash. No sound loop, just black screen and back to post. So a straight restart, no lock up.

Sounds like psu to me if it's simply shutting down with no error.

My bet would be a dodgy PSU.

Press the windows key + break, advanced system settings, press the start-up and recovery settings button, and uncheck automatically restart. That should let you see any BSOD. Also, check the reliability history. You should be able to get an idea of what's going on there.

Yeah, sounds like a power issue to me too, you pulled out a PSU calculator and checked your load? Checked the PSU for caked on dust?

I'll try to check it with a multimeter next week (working 84 hours this week) and see. It's not a dust problem. I clean the computer out every fortnight and there are dust filters over all the vents.

if you dont have compressed air, use a hair dryer on the most powerful setting. Use the little attachments to get in more closely and focus on the tougher areas.

I'm pretty sure the cool setting is there for a reason. It's not for cleaning out a pc though.

The clues in the name of the item....

Keeps my costs down over time, despite a fucking insane original purchase price, its saved me in the long run. Im certainly not daft enough to stick a hair dryer in there. Or bleach as I saw one woman do back when I did tech support.

High heat hurts a computer, a hairdryer isn't going to do that to a computer that is off and has cooled down. (Unless you regularly burn your scalp drying your hair).

Sit there with it on your graphics card for 10 minutes while playing Crysis 3, and yeah, you might damage it. Otherwise, you'll be fine, cool setting or not.

If you have compressed air in a can, then you can do a far better job getting the dust out. Especially amongst large cooling fins and the like. Combine with a vacuum cleaner to catch the dust for best results.

And also; Why the fuck would you stripe a pair of SSDs? They're fast enough already, they're inherently less reliable than mechanical drives, and if you lose one, all your shit's gone.
