hmm - have your house smelling of musty paper and need to remortgage to extend it due to the lack of space or spend a shit load less and have no smell by getting a kindle (other devices are available).. let me think.

I've got 30,000 ebooks, and a selection of ereaders, I just prefer to read real books at home.

30,000? at your age you've only got months left so you only need a few of those and can free up all that storage. long term, your dogs won't inherit them, they'll be only interested having a chew on your gristle

Just finished the latest Rebus, although there's another due soon-ish. Yes the retired Edinburgh detective who can't stay retired (this being the second time, as I recall) is back, and doing things his way. He's changed, as has Edinburgh, and Scottish policing, in real life, as in this fiction. No more Lothian & Borders, it's Police Scotland, with Edinburgh being Division Six. You can sort of tell that most of the power's shifted to what used to be Strathclyde Plod... Murder, skullduggery, music, and a man who's feeling the years catch up with him.

If you like Rebus, or detective novels in general, you'll like this. You pretty much know what to expect from Rankin in this area by now. 8/10

'Real human being'. I do love people who like reading about imaginary events and people being snobby about people who like to add imaginary settings to their tomes of choice.

BTW, for those interested, the pub that Rebus frequents is an actual boozer. Nice pint of ale, can be a wee bit "Rankin fan central" at times, although not nearly as bad as the places where J.K. Rowling breathed fresh air whilst writing the first 'Arry Potter.

Indeed! It probably helps I manage a bookshop and get a decent pile of free / advance stuff every year on top of a 50% staff discount! I have a picture somewhere of my collection , it was probably comparable to TBK's at one point , between getting flooded a few years ago and moving I lost a chunk and then donated probably 3 billy bookcases worth to oxfam and sold all my original pile of dragonlance / forgotten realms type stuff in a job lot on ebay. It's currently sitting at about 3 Billy bookcases , of fiction , 1 of non fiction. I tried ebooks , but I just don't enjoy the tactile sensation of it.

Last two things read

Fury of the Tomb by SA Sidor. Utterly pulp nonsense about an Egyptologist who discovers a tomb, mummys , ghouls and other shenanigans ensue. Not brilliant but entertaining nonsense, pretty much The Mummy - Brendan Fraser version which is obviously awesome - in book form.

Followed up by The Poppy War by RF Kuang, fantasy set in Chinese / Eastern inspired world. With lots of allegories, allusions and inspiration from recent , current history and various Chinese myths and legends. I found it very original , well plotted and highly entertaining. It's not a perfect book , but it is a great book and well worth a read for fantasy fans.

Currently reading Chasing New Horizons, by Alan Stern and David Grinspoon , the account of the New Horizons mission to Pluto and the outer solar system. Utterly fascinating so far!

Tell me about it, we queued for 20 minutes to get into the Elephant House because the kids had to see it. Pleasant enough teas and cakes, nothing special though.

Just finished "The Alloy Of Law", the 4th book in the Mistborn series. As good, if not better than the first. Much more focused than the first 3 books (About 200 pages shorter than each of them) and the book is better as a result. Absolutely brilliant and cant wait to start the next book in the series....

.... Except Im now going to start "The Blade Itself" by Joe Abercrombie due to my mate Dougs incessant nagging.

An excellent book and excellent trilogy. One of my favourite band of bastards resides in those pages. The Bloody Nine , I love him.

It came highly recommended by a mate and I can see why. The characters are probably some of the best written that I've seen in literature. Jezal is suitably pompous and unlikeable, Glokta is one of my favourite characters in all of literature despite not being what you might call a "sympathetic" character, Logen is a character with layer upon layer of depth, Bayaz seems like a bit of a stereotypical mage character at first but soon becomes so much more than that.... I could go on. I'll definitely be reading the rest of the series. I'll say this as well: if HBO are looking for a fantasy series to dramatise after GOT finishes, they could do a lot worse than this. The action scenes are fantastically written and really easy to visualise, which is perhaps unusual for the fantasy genre.

I was going to read the second in the series next but Amazon have all the Stormlight Archive books on sale for 99p each (kindle edition) so I'm going to move onto Words Of Radiance. By the way, if you have the faintest interest in fantasy novels, you NEED to try this series. It's already being touted as better than ASOIAF in various places around the interwebs. Read the first chapter of The Way Of Kings and I bet you're hooked.

Sand Dan Glotka is awesome! If you've finished the first law trilogy, there are three other books set in that world with varying levels of crossover. The first of them, Best Served Cold, I thought was exceptionally good, perhaps even better than the main series. The other two, The Heroes and Red Country, are good reads as well.

Not finished the trilogy yet, just the first book. I will come back to it but the aforementioned stormlight archive deals were too good to resist. Just started Words Of Radiance and it already has its hooks in me. So well written and imagined.

And yes, Glokta is awesome. It makes me feel dirty liking him though. He's a bit of a cunt. An awesome cunt, but a cunt nonetheless!

That was one if my favourite aspects of those books , the layer and depth to seemingly familiar archetypes. Glotka is indeed an excellent character . Would also recommend the other books as well. Think Heroes is perhaps a favourite of them all.

Completely agree. Jezal is a sniveling, whining, self-centered bellend but I still wanted to see him succeed and wanted to know where his story goes.

Logen was the character I found a bit boring.... that is until the later parts of the book:

  Spoiler: highlight to read
The reveal of "The Bloody-Nine" as an alter-ego, rather than just a nickname. Damn, that was well written.

I will continue the series later but I've been meaning to get back to Stormlight Archive for a while. Started Words Of Radiance yesterday and already 10% of the way through the book (It's over 1000 pages). So incredibly hooked. I like Sanderson's work anyway but this series is a whole other level. Seriously tempted to get a Bridge Four tattoo

Didn't really read much on holiday the past few weeks , so finished up -Chasing New Horizons: Inside the Epic First Mission to Pluto by Alan Stern and David Grinspoon

I found this a fascinating read, all about development of the first probe to Pluto and all the politics and shenanigans it took to get it off the ground , actually built and launched. Plus all the science that was hoped for is very well explained. Fascinating stuff!

https://twitter.com/MykeCole/status/1029860281864871937 - I was already looking forward to reading Thin Air , but that's high praise!

Just finished sci fi book called Semiosis , by Sue Burke - https://www.waterstones.com/book/sem.../9780008300777

It's about a small colony group that land on a new world , with all the usual things that brings. The planet they land on is significantly older than Earth and other types of intelligence's have evolved. It's a wonderfully written book , I absolutely adore the idea of trying to communicate with plants and coming to a mutual co-existence. It's about power, community and mutuality. I love the world she's created and the inhabitants in it.

Some bits of it reminded me of Children of Time - first contact with arachnids, excellent book - others reminded me of some of the sci fi I read years ago , like Legacy of Heorot and some Le Guin.

It's not a bombastic book , but engrossing, interesting and gripping.

All Systems Red - Martha Wells , first in the Murderbot series. Plot is a scientific expedition gets attacked by a critter, scientist gets saved by the expedition security cyborg which calls itself murderbot and it goes from there! Murderbot is a fun character , the whole thing is entertaining and there's a few more due this year.

Noumenon - Marina J Lostetter - https://www.waterstones.com/book/nou.../9780008223397

Scientific expedition to another star , to discover why it's blinking. A multi generational tale , that covers several centuries of the expedition. I loved this , the writing was good , loved the plotting and premise behind the story. As the generations of the expedition progress and social changes take place and affect the society. Thoroughly gripping , thoroughly entertaining. Straight onto the sequel for me - Noumenon Infinity

Words Of Radiance finished. Typical Sanderson fare -really well written but sometimes a little drawn out when it could be improved drastically by telling a shorter story.

Gonna take a short Sanderson break before reading Oathbreaker and give "Pandemic" by A. G. Riddle a go.
