No, if you select multiple rows that aren't sequential and try to cut them it throws up an error.

Anyone have anything that can count specific columns data and sum it?

for example =COUNTIF(D1: D100 "DAY") AND (E1: E100 "SHOP")

Very minor one. When I tab across a row and then press enter, it returns me to the left in my original column and drops a row. However, when I shift tab to go left, it only drops me down a row without returning me to my original column on pressing enter. Is there any way to move left and then return to the original column?

I'll try here first but I think I may be the go to guy for this sort of thing which is quite vexing...

Not Excel, Access.

The problem:

I need to import data from a googleform. The googleform generates a csv for import purposes that is fucking ugly and riddled with needless cack. I can import the data BUT about a dozen fields are being imported as text that I need to convert to a coded number.

So, for instance, one such field is "Word Experience" which will have one of 4 values: "Over 6 months", "3 to 6 months", "0 to 3 months", "None". I need to translate this to a score of 3, 2, 1 or 0 when it is stored as a field.

How the fuck do I do that? I've done FAR more complex shit before but I really can't get my head around this wanker. I can get it to code it as it is entered but it won't let me import it via the same method.

If any of this is remotely clear, then I apologise and can make it vaguer if needed.

Does it have to be done at import time? Would be simple to write a couple of queries to change after the event.

I don't care when it's done as long as it is done post-import.

assuming you have good data in the text imports, i'd cheat - load into excel and find/replace, then load back into access

just easier than building a horrible SQL query

I need to make the import process an automated 1 click affair so doing anything to the data pre-import isn't really an option.

import the CSV into a temp table then fill the final destination table with a query over the temp table ...

select field1
,field2
,field3
,case when field4 = 'Over 6 months' then '3'
when field4 = '3 to 6 months' then '2'
when .....
else '0' end as field4

There is a shared Excel workbook that logs and collates certain information. Some of the information is sourced from an external workbook residing elsewhere on a shared network drive. Before you ask, no we can’t put them all in the same folder.

I am using the following formulas to garner numbers from these external spreadsheets:

=SUMPRODUCT(--('T:\Directory Path\[2014 Locality Case Monitoring.xls]JAN'!$G$2:$G$500="Joint Working/Referral"))

=SUMPRODUCT(--('T:\Directory Path\[2014 Locality Case Monitoring.xls]JAN'!$G$2:$G$500="Consultation"))

In each instance it is counting the number of occurrences of the following outcomes:

- Joint Worker/Referral
- Consultation

This shared workbook is accessed by various people running Excel 2003 through to 2010, the problem is the links are breaking every time someone opens, edits and saves the spreadsheet. To try and remedy this I’ve done a blanket email to all users asking them to disable “update links on save” within Web Options when doing a Save As. I think the majority have. However, I can’t physically go and check the others have done the same because they’re based in a different satellite offices around Norfolk - plus trying to reach them via phone is nearly an impossible task.

I am now wondering is there a way to stop these links from updating even if someone has “update links on save” ticked. I have done some Googling and someone has suggested using a Hyperlink instead, but I’m struggling to incorporate it into the above formulas.

I’d rather have a final solution to this, so when new staff join they can just access the spreadsheet and save, without having to go through the process of making sure they have “update links on save” unticked etc.

I doubt Excel is the best platform for the system and that Access (albeit universally shunned by all but the public sector) with a separate front and back end would be a more elegant solution. The back end would reside in your T drive and each individual would have their own front end (which could be customised for their individual needs but have the same core links to the back end tables). Of course, you'd need an indepth understanding of Access which I guess you don't have if you're using Excel.

Ta, Access would be ideal, but it has to be Excel. Unfortunately, as I fall under the Social Services department, I have no access to Access. That's exclusive to our ICT department I believe. This means that developing an Access system for this is way beyond my current pay grade/job spec ! I'm only working on this as a "favour" to help with collecting data/statistics - something which the Planning and Performance department should be doing.

Sooooo any other suggestions s'il vous plaît?

Short of getting excel to copy and paste the remote table as a local working copy in another worksheet and using that to work from... I got nothing.

There are a hundred CRM/contact manager platforms that could do that entire piece without creating a load of downstream work. It's just conversion tracking isn't it?

Pretty much. I'm stuck with having to present a solution using Excel and nothing else. Bear in mind the manager involved was previously hand tallying all these stats (there's a helluva lot more to it than what I've shown), taking her half a day to do it. With this Excel workbook I've drawn up it does it all instantly and updates on the go... apart from the small hitch identified above.

I think I might just show her/draw up a step by step guide on how to relink the sources in Excel. It might be the easiest solution, as at the end of the day the statistics are only relevant to her.

Excel 2010, conditional formatting. I have it on a row, I don't want to redo it for the next 650 rows, I've tried crtl+d, dragging it down to continue, special paste formatting. Not working. Help me before I get so frustrated about it, I burn the office down.

Sorry I wasn't clear, I mean it want it to be independant, so a1 changes depending on a3, b1 on b3 and so on. not all change depending on a1.
