Windows Installer (Windows 7 64 Bit)

An ignoramus in search of hopefully a simple answer.

My Sony laptop has started playing silly buggers: it all works fine but it seems like one program is keeping its Windows Installer element running and it's screwing up trying to install anything else.

I can get round it by going into msconfig and disabling all non Windows services, installing the software then restoring them, but was wondering if there's any way of finding out which program is dragging the system down?

And no, format C: isn't an option

I've not used it in this situation before but there is such a thing as the Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, it may help, then again it may not, worth trying for a small download.

Update:

Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup Utility has been replaced by Microsoft Fixit, but guess it is a worthy successor as it repaired the corrupted file (Frameworks 4 btw) and now everything seems to be spinky and fresh.

+rep for you good sir

Hmm re-installed frameworks and the problem comes back as soon as windows update has a go at it... Bit odd but at least it's narrowed the search right down - just need to stabilise the installation I guess. Maybe a restart of windows before any updates? Or just leave it be for a while to see if Microsoft sort it out?

Can't you use the windows repair functionality which blows away windows behind the scenes, leaving installations and files intact, and reinstalls it. It's not a complete reinstall but fixes a lot of weird shit like that.

Possibly, but it seems like there's something else dragging the installer system down too. Now the only way I can get Windows Update to work is by disabling all non Microsoft services in msconfig, more digging required methinks

Ok, think I've cracked it!

-Deleted the registry key - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Installer\InProgress

-Unregistered and then reregistered the Windows Installer Service.

Seems to have done it.....
