Windows 7

Windows 7 (Build 7000) is out and doing the rounds in the usual places (MS are supposed to be making it publically available this month some time)

I've just installed it, (and it was very quick indeed - on a Dell 755) and not hit any snags.

One thing that's instantly bugging me, is the inability to fire up more than one Explorer window using the Winkey+E combination. You can't even start a new Explorer by clikcing the Windows Explorer shortcut in the Start Menu!

Only way I've found so far is right-clicking on a folder and selecting "Open in new window" which is a tedious way to do it when you'rr used to the keyboard shortcut.

Rant over!

Any idea if windows7 has got a HAL (Ala' Win2K, XP etc.) ? I understood that lack of HAL is the main reason Vista is so shit for hardware support.. ?

eek: Very Vista-like of course. Feels snappy in use though. Have yet to install some regular apps I use at work though.

Blunteh: I'm pretty sure it's using similar code-base as Vista, so I'd guess it's HAL-independant

Driver-wise it's found the most important things in the Dell (sound, network, graphics)

I think I may be tempted to give this a bash. The old lady needs a format so its a good excuse to put 7 on.

As someone who supports both XP and Vista on a daily basis with hundreds of customers it's the little things that bother me. Vista moving Device Manager into Control Panel and making the Connect To menu very user friendly were fantastic moves. Unfortunately the bastardization of right clicking on the desktop and going to properties, the integration of run into the search menu and the new way you access all programmes, although neater ( less obvious for customers ) undid any good feelings.

XP and Vista's category view is a pain in the ass too.

As long as I'm breathing I'll change every damn computer I find to classic view!

Not being able to use winkey+e to bring up a second Explorer window (obviously works for the first) is a mind-boggling ommission!

I'm sure there'll be more gripes from me

I've heard good things about Windows 7 from areas of the press that are traditionally very withering when it comes to new MS OSs. Interested.

It's got me curious as well, seems like a fairly solid OS (entirely uninformed opinion). Any word on how DRM-tastic it is?

That would definitely annoy me - I use winkey+e to open multiple windows all the time

Is this new windows actually going to offer any incentives to upgrade? Vista was supposed to be gaming bliss with directx 10. Directx 10 turned out to be an absolute farce. I know the whole everyone will have to upgrade at some point due to newer software requiring new operating systems argument. There must be some new incentive? speed increase? stability? etc.

Not saying its rubbish as I use vista and actually really like it. Its stable and still runs a shit load of my old games. but to be fair there really was no incentive to upgrade from xp other than my HD crapping out, when I bought a new one I thought what the hell might as well give it a go.

Mate installed this at the weekend, he's not normally open minded but said he was pleasantly surprised and mildly impressed, even on an older laptop if the aero features were turned off.
He did complain that ie8 was very poor, lots of sites wouldn't work properly although firefox worked ok. When he complained that facebook wouldn't work I felt ashamed for him that this is what he had fallen too, 'install a new OS, now can I get facebook up'

An hour later he had w7 wiped and reverted to an older version again until they iron out a few more bugs

I'm still seriously considering buying a XP license to downgrade my Vista PC My surround sound (on board) chip won't work with vista (sounds like I'll have to buy a creative card to get it) and my webcam won't work with it... Add that to the fact that it's slower than XP and I regret going for Vista totally

Sounds like Win7 will be the same.

Aye I can fully understand you wanting to downgrade if hardware is not working. When Vista first came out there was forums on fire with people struggling to get hardware drivers working, but over the last 2 years it seems to have calmed down. Another plus for me personally is that windows XP has no native support for my SATA HD, so I would have to install a floppy drive just to install the SATA drivers. Vista has support for a USB stick during install for drivers and makes it much easier for me. Only thing I had an issue with so far with Vista is having to turn Aero off to play some of my older games but that's it.

Rainy, you can get around the SATA thing by turning it off in BIOS prior to install, grabbing the driver, and re-enabling it afterwards. Bit of a faff, yeh, but if the alternative is running Vista!

I naively thought that MS would eventually sort it out... but by the sound of a few articles I've read a lack of HAL completely knobbles the OS' hardware support.

e.g. http://crave.cnet.co.uk/gamesgear/0,...9287112,00.htm

I've not looked into it deeper though.... I seem to reach cba faster and faster as I get older...

hehe that's what I'm usually like, if it don't work straight out the box it goes in the bin Guess I was just lucky this time with Vista

My main issues with Vista revolved around pointless changes. For example:

When creating an RDP shortcut to connect to the console, it has always been "/console"

So WHY for fucks sake change it to "/admin" ? If you know you need it, you know how to do it.

As soon as one of you adventurous types gets it installed and working nicely with all the common apps and games on an 8800 GTS, let me know. I might install it rather than play with it in VMware Workstation as I'm currently doing.

Whats the chances of this installing on my E drive without problems or messing up my C drive? I ask because i was meant to have an easy ride upgrading my HDD and that took most of Christmas lol can i just burn it to disk, then choose the E drive during the install?

Take a Ghost image and put it on your E drive. Wipe and install 7. Make sure you have a copy of Hiren's bootdisk first so you can restore your existing image if everything goes Eth-shaped.
