Then it goes back to the question Wilco presented of where else would you test it? Not too many accidents with the Tesla til now it seems.

You test with testers under controlled circumstances, not Joe Public.

All those prams and car seats your parents sell. How about we test them by putting real babies in them and pushing them down stairs or into traffic?

you mean the car seats which are tested in crash rigs at 30mph? yea they are tested. And the prams which are also tested in all sorts of manners? yes, they have to pass EU and British standards. You think a manufacturer would get the blame if people push their children into a car whilst in a pram?

Those controlled circumstances will be on tracks/special roads with road lines etc perfect and not a real representation of roads now? Nothing would give you better results than real life situations.

We wouldnt be talking about this if two people did the simple thing of watching the road in a car, which is expected of any driver.

Prams are tested in controlled circumstances. They don't demand that pram manufacturers use them for 5 million miles out in public to prove that kids in new prams don't die more often than older prams, in case they are poor when faced with a motor bike that fell on its side then flipped up so the front wheel lands in the cot...

Tesla test on closed tracks, and public roads with internal test drivers. Which to me would be analogous to the test regimes for prams. Certainly the regulations for testing advanced assist / autonomous tech aren't as mature as for prams, and leave a lot more leeway to the manufacturer. I'll be honest I don't know the details, but I'm fairly certain they knew bad press from accidents would be a major business risk, so I don't think they'll be blase about that. But maybe you consider me too trusting of Tesla.

Tesla marketed Autopilot heavily, so accidents with autopilot engaged are the quid pro quo for that strategy. But just because it's easy to think 'Tesla crash, was autopilot involved?' doesn't mean that Volvos, BMWs and Audis haven't crashed whilst their drivers were using similar advanced assists. I think there is a lot of selective reporting bias in the view that Teslas crash more often than other makes.

Certainly their fully autonomous driving R&D isn't out in the open like Waymo, Volvo etc. And I can believe that's because they are behind with that. But I don't think that means they'll just throw it on the cars anyway.

They need to change the name from Autopilot.

And disable all the steering input options that aren't a steering wheel.

when you say steering options, you mean the one that keeps it between the lanes following the lines of the road? The more advanced version of lane assist?

Just had a call from Tesla. They've been told April next year for the first Tesla's into the UK.

Good article on Tesla over-promising full autopilot, plus what seems like a sensible strategy from Waymo.

i would have thought that a software update (if not already in place) where the sensors in the seat could determine whether driver is in the seat and if not, disable autopilot/cruise control etc.

Slaps a big fuck off sign that says "im a cunt and shouldn't be driving anything" on your chest and then ejects you out the roof james bond style.

I missed that Musk managed to wipe $3billion off the value of Tesla on wednesday due to being a dick during the financial report.

Had a call from the local Tesla place yesterday... had my hopes it was about the Model 3...
They’d just called to ask if I’d like a Model S/X test drive to get a feel for things for when the 3 appears.
