Inertiaman likes this.

I mean, I'm kinda feeling sorry not sorry for him but I like this. A correction was more than due.

Fair play to the man for stepping-up like that, and can’t help but think this has made your average Joe think about what they share and allow access to.

I haven’t had any form of notification from Facebook as to whether my profile info has been involved, but I came across a link today allowing you to find out:

Hopefully there’ll be some major changes to the platform, but I’m not holding out for it.

If you ever clicked a button named “allow” whilst using Facebook then it’s pretty much yes.

Well, I've not been on fb since 2005, asked it to be deleted. But i assume there's a shadow profile somewhere. Be interested to know about that.

@matthewstoller: In response to the scandal, Zuckerberg is going to hand over regulatory power on the use of data for academic research to, and I'm not making this up, the Charles Koch Foundation. https://twitter.com/matthewstoller/s...553345/photo/1

Zuckerberg is handling this well by all accounts, I’m not sure how many CEOs would sit in front of what is effectively a public trial and accept culpability (although it’s fairly clear he has no other option).

The platform does need a massive overhaul and will lead to them looking for new revenue streams, as I imagine people will be a lot more restrictive in what data is allowed on the site.

I wouldn't bet on it, google has been flagging its data usage click through on its search for a couple of months now and I haven't even scanned it like 99% of the population.

I thought he handled it very well. I think there could've been better answers to Ted Cruz, but I understand he'd just appear partisan. It's a shame the Palantir question fell apart as the senator clearly didn't have a clue what she was talking about. He looked rattled until he realised she didn't understand.

Day one was a complete shambles. Orrin Hatch actually asked him how he makes money. Only a couple of reps posed a challenge and they were showboat questions rather than in the detail. "Would you be comfortable sharing the name of the hotel you stayed at last night?" Also I lost count of how many "we'll get back to you" answers in the transcripts. Lots of things he damn well knows. He's gaming and hoping it goes away when the press does.

Day two will hopefully be more of a beating.

Also one interesting comment I saw;

Quote:
Sam Ervin’s Watergate committee had seven members. The committee probing the Titanic’s sinking also had seven. The Joint Committee on the Investigation of the Pearl Harbor Attack had 10.

Total number of senators on the panel to question Zuckerberg on Tuesday afternoon: 44. They had to bring in seven folding tables to seat all the senators.
Circus. A suitable fine or the hope of regulation that impacts FB's model seems a very distant prospect at this stage.

I found the whole thing rather cringeworthy. It was like watching a child trying to explain a video game they're playing to their grandparents.

Despite the cringe worthiness, these people will be making decisions about the industry in the near future. And as someone who works in this industry I feel we better start figuring out ways to talk to them about it. The current marketing way oversells capabilities many times and we're going to end up with regulations to match the promise instead of the delivery.
