I use this for oob access to Cisco hardware:

https://www.get-console.com/shop/en/...s-4n-port.html

Perfectly serviceable for my needs, connect to it over bluetooth/wireless/ethernet. You can ssh/telnet directly to each port or use the built in webserver.

If you need a virtual com port then you'll need something else, perhaps something from Digi.

have a door entry system that communicates with the main machine to record door events using a controller board that plugs in via a serial connection.

It's way past upgrading but before we get to that point (which is a task we are all putting off to another day), I'd like to shift the software to a VM. Problem is you can't access the com ports on a VM from the host machine in Hyper V so the only way I can think of doing this is using a serial to tcp/ip app to act as a go between.

A quick Google makes it look like it's possible to setup a com port in a HyperV VM. Have you tried ?

yes - there are various apps available that claim to do it

Only one actually seemed to communicate across the LAN at each "end" but COM port data wasn't being sent. What I don't know is if the failure from that point of view is the COM port, the app, the server or a combination of.

I "suppose" it's entirely possible the sodding Host machine isn't talking to the COM ports properly. Anyone know of anything Dell specific for a Poweredge R330 rack model? - do I need to do something funky in the BIOS for this stupid server to allow the COM port to be used for normal COM port activity?

I may try it with a bog standard desktop to share it's com port and see if that plays.

Surely you want it just working on the VM 1st before messing about with an app to send that data anywhere

I need to plug the stupid comms board into "something" with a com port. I want the data that is received to be passed to the VM so as far the management software on it is concerned, the comms board is plugged into it directly.

I was planning on using the physical server that happens to be running the VM - but I'm not entirely sure the COM ports on it haven't been hijacked in someway by some mad process in the BIOS that I haven't found yet.

The next test to try is to plug the comms board into a desktop and so I can be sure that from a basic level the data would be coming in. Then I can install the network element of it and see if I can get it to then transmit the data to the VM.
