I think it's more the hypocrisy of the situation that's annoying everyone. Cameron is in a public position and has been very outspoken about Tax Avoidance in the past. Why won't he talk about his own families behaviour, in relation to it? It's an opportunity to show some leadership and rail against the rich vs poor narrative that's in the public mindset at the moment.

Also he has mocked privacy arguments in the past and for him to rely on a statement like "it's a private matter" is bordering on the satirical.

I actually think he has showed leadership on this, the last budget did more on aggressive tax planning than any budget I can remember, but I would say that. I don't think he's in any more position to talk about his brother's tax planning than Corbyn is to talk about his anti-Semite brother.

Why? That's ridiculous. If Cameron has instigated or initiated tax planning through BVI that's one thing, if his brother is doing the same that's another.

Cunning is a die-hard Labourite, he'd call for Cameron's resignation if he picked his nose in public.

There are far too many calls for heads to roll and people to be indicted. Let the dust settle and see who has done what.

Corbyn might have pulled his gloves on a bit early - as soon as a Labour MP or someone associated with the party has their name mentioned he is going to look very foolish.

Nah, I think he smells blood here. Fuck it, if he has to ditch a couple of Labour toffs along the way then so much the better.

Isn't this some of that aggressive, message-over-principles, media friendly politicizing that you've been after from Lab?

Either way let me know when 11 million smoking gun documents turn up demonstrating Corbyn's brothers racism and I promise to give a shit.

Like I say, I think this is the sort of behaviour Labour needs from Corbyn and he smells blood, albeit on topics slightly more meaningful than this. It's a little bit like Steel, with Labour's mad flailing into the wind, but ultimately grabbing headlines. There's not 11m documents (or even 1, as far as I can tell) demonstrating misbehaviour by Cameron.

Yeah yeah sorry that was low and late. It remains the case that whilst there's far larger stories there, the UK press is naturally going to rip Cameron a new one with this first. I'm fine with that. Whilst it's well documented this is a great bit of corroboration.

Worthy of the amusing news thread, HMRC's HQ buildings are leased under a PFI deal to a company operating out of an off shore tax haven.

The public would be outraged if they realised just how much of central London and commercial property is owned by offshore companies. Jersey / BVI / Cayman property holding companies are incredibly common structures which are frequently funded through shareholder debt funnelled into other dubious destinations. The rules are slowly changing but there was undoubtedly huge sums of money and value which has disappeared offshore over a period lasting decades.

Bear in mind that 'City of London' and 'London' are not the same. The 'City' gets a lot of special treatment for historical reasons.

Hence why it can act like an offshore tax haven.

I wouldn't get carried away with the whole City of London thing. It's an old place with some weird rules and traditions but it isn't a tax haven in the normal understanding of the phrase - for the simple reason that the same UK tax rules apply to the City as everywhere else. It is of course a financial centre but it isn't "offshore".

Stop playing the high and mighty - if this has been going on it has been going on for years, not just under Tory governments but under Labour governments as well.

The whole thing stinks.

I don't see it as corrupt, everyone plays by the same rules and I'd do the same thing if I were them.

Ironically the only thing I can imagine improving the situation is the lowering of taxes.

Ultimately, under the current tax regime, the more wealthy and mobile someone is, if you crackdown on their offshore financial arrangements the more likely they'll be to just move.

erm, laundering money for companies owned by interests within embargoed states is absolutely corrupt and entirely illegal. We're not talking about grey areas with much of this, even the parts that related to non-embargoed countries still potentially fall foul of a ton of laws.
