What it is is peanuts really. Be more bothered about the billions of flown capital that government have facilitated through inaction.

This all doesn't make any sense to me as he's only done what any decent account would tell you to do...

But as an old friend of ours has said on Facebook. "As much as a crap 'Tory' Cameron is, we can't pretend he did anything wrong here. I think the biggest element of this that has been lost on journalists is that the fund he invested in was not a tax avoidance vehicle it was a commodities investment fund that was actively undertaking trades.
The way that journos are behaving is that all investment spending should be taxed at full income tax rate and not offset. Which shows their ignorance of business, if you don't offset tax there is nothing to justify the risk of investment and people won't fucking bother and the economy will fucking collapse."

Usual chatter, I'm sure it's bollocks and the reason why heMs not produced it isn't that he's waiting for a copy from HMRC, but instead that his team of media wizards are planning a big reveal to blow us all away.

Found it a few mins after PMQ started. There we go. A few more months practice and they'll be a shallow, cynical PR sausage factory just like the tories! Good times!

Saved it at the last, if only he'd managed to get it to the taxman in time! Call it cynical PR sausage factory if you like (although there wasn't much evidence of that from the Tories last week!), but if you're going to demand tax returns from your opponents, for fuck sake get your own (or better still, given they're so clean and inoffensive, just pre-empt him entirely).

Yeah because you only have to pay tax on that if it's over your PA. So even at a theoretical full rate he's behind about 4k. That's not exactly in Cameron's 200k PET payment league is it.

There's absolutely nothing wrong in that. All it shows is that he's wealthy. His mother was fully within her rights to gift that sum to her son and the economic substance of that transaction is in accordance with its legal form - i.e. as a potentially exempt transfer. The law provides for a 7-year period where it it may not be exempt. There's nothing even remotely dodgy about that.

I agree with you from a legal perspective (survivor rule). However, the issue I think Nersh is raising is that the mantra of we're all in it together does not necessarily sit nicely with avoiding 40% tax on a hefty lump sum. Avoidance is legal and there's nothing wrong with it, but from a public perception POV it's not ideal and I believe is the same issue as Miliband was denounced for last year with his deed of variation with his brother to avoid IHT.

It's the same as when these arseholes all claimed child benefit for their sprogs despite being pretty wealthy and then restrict it to future generations (rightly so in my view but that's a different point). Again because we're all in it together/ those with the broadest shoulders blah blah.

I don't know why you're trying to create a partisan issue out of this; it's clear that anyone with assets avoids tax. Why wouldn't they? My point is more that you're completely fair game to be rinsed if this happens, particularly when you're implementing new policies designed to lessen welfare and increase tax receipts from those terrible multinationals (who also legally avoid tax).

Oh I don't really care, a tiny proportion of people pay IHT and it's one the more sensible wealth taxes (although perhaps something that taxes all gifts from parents to children above a certain level makes more sense). I just don't think Corbyn will get much mileage out of it, the faithful will love it, the aforementioned names will shuffle awkwardly while looking at their feet, and the rest of the voters they need to win over will continue to think of them as wealth stealers trying to take the money out of their children's pockets.

@Andy - Indeed. I've been the beneficiary of avoidance and would be again. But then as a matter of principle I don't go round telling people with fuck all that they should feel good about having even less fuck all because we're all the same.

Get this, YouGov poll in January last year found that 65% of people thought raising the threshold from £325k to £1m was a positive move. There's no way anything close to that 65% would end up paying a single cent.
