Agreed, but that is kind of the prime ministers job (well one part of it)

Sure sure he was quite the leader. Trouble is of course that there's then this whole boring process thing where you have to get other people to agree with you and present evidence and shit. That's the prime ministers job also (well one part of it) and one key focus of the debate. After all, who can disagree with how cool and awesome a land invasion of a country and the ensuing complete societal collapse of the region and mass displacement of populace into neighbouring regions is.

I'm ashamed to say it, but at the time, I believed all the miss information about the WMD and the 45 minutes shit.

I would actually be interested in Blair's alternate history if he articulated it

I didn't, because it was overt nonsense. Or rather yes I figured Saddam had some nerve gas somewhere, but not that threatened the UK. I'm just generally pretty hawkish and figured a none sanctioned Iraqi without a dictator would generally be better for the region, particularly at the time when the region seemed to exporting some pretty nasty terrorism.

I was highly nave in my view at the time that people actually value freedom and completely unaware that Iraq was a complete sectarian s**tshow with a Sunni minority maintaining control and order over a majority Shia populace through complete oppression (I don't actually ever remember this being referenced until everything went to crap).

still live and learn

Don't forget this forum was around during the tail end of the Iraq war (Nov 2003 onwards). In fact the very oldest thread in this forum was this one containing pictures from Iraq (although sadly the image links are now dead).

http://www.trickery.net/vb/showthread.php?t=1248

Of more interest is the 'Saddam Captured' thread.

http://www.trickery.net/vb/showthread.php?t=2923

Or the 'Withdrawal of US troops looking for WMDs' thread.

http://www.trickery.net/vb/showthread.php?t=3900

Reading these threads 13 years later really does put some perspective on the arguments Blair is currently making.

It's an argument that goes nowhere though. You can't say one way or the other how the world would of turned out if we hadn't invaded. We can't rewind the Matrix back and run it all again with different parameters.

Well, 1/4 million civilians probably wouldn't have died as a result of upheaval, and Halliburton wouldn't be as wealthy. 2 fairly definite pluses there.

That's why it's a little pointless to talk about outcomes - it's simply too vast and complex a hypothetical to be anything other than someone's opinion on the matter.

What is much clearer is the intention of the key parties at the time. It was beyond doubt that this country and Parliament was hurried into war for politically expedient reasons. That is what Blair should be fucking nailed to the wall for.

David Davis is apparently going to table a contempt of parliament motion against Blair for Iraq. No idea what the outcome might be, but it's better than nothing.

I never heard anything about that contempt motion in the end, did Davis table it?

Also, Chilcott gives an interview about it all.

Bloke doesn't appear to be able to finish a sentence in good order let alone a fucking enquiry.
