Uber Out

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-41358640

Uber's London licence not renewed. My guess is that it'll be fine after an appeal, but this would be really fucking annoying to put it mildly. Totally get any complaints about overall corporate behaviour, but if they're pinning this on protecting the customer they're talking complete bollocks.

Lots of Londoners going to pretty unhappy about this. They should work something out. I wonder how much influence the Mayor's office had in this?

Uber is shitty. There is a reason that we have taxi regulations / licensing. It's to make sure that you don't get screwed over as a taxi user. All Uber is doing is side stepping the regulations to make a quick buck.

Well no. There's certainly a discussion we could have around the level of regulation and how this has created an artificial monopoly. However Uber is far from a White Knight in this situation, for example look what the Met said about them recently.

We need to separate defending Uber from the more reasonable position that not renewing their licence is too drastic a measure given their importance in getting people around in London when public transport is not available and the alternatives are very expensive / slow.

Ok, so digging in the the article(s) the reason Uber didn't get its licensed renewed is:
  • Its approach to reporting serious criminal offences.
  • Its approach to how medical certificates are obtained.
  • Its approach to how Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks are obtained.
  • Its approach to explaining the use of Greyball in London - software that could be used to block regulatory bodies from gaining full access to the app and prevent officials from undertaking regulatory or law enforcement duties.

They have 21 days to appeal and can operate normally until that deadline.

They'll appeal, operate normally during the appeals process, address the issues mentioned in the interim and be licenced again without interruption irrespective of how the final appeal resolves itself.

Notwithstanding, there's some golden irony to the yoof being interviewed about how this is an atrocious decision because it means their fares will increase (sod any wider issues) when not long ago a number of those were no doubt singing 'Oooh Jeremy Corbyn' or JezWeKhan. This is how the song ends.

Edit - gold from the Shadow Business Sec:

So she thinks Uber and Deliveroo represent some of the worst of the gig economies employment /non-employment practices and you think that makes her a clown. Preventing the exploitation of this class of worker is important and far from hard left, I'd consider it a centrist policy frankly and if you think that it places her hard left I think that goes to show how far to the right your own views are.

Look there's a myriad of reasons why she and most of the shadow cabinet are incompetents, and given that the hard left fringe of the Labour party is slowly beginning to control it from within, with trade unions regaining their grip on the party, if Labour did somehow manage to get into power there's now a real danger their recent manifesto would be seen as moderate by comparison to the changes they would make. Needless to say on this single issue you don't protect workers by making them unemployed; put simply, protection of these Uber drivers isn't their concern.

Really?

Because she thinks "most people" in London pay for cabs with cash, and doesn't think that will change. Because she thinks installing a card machine is a burden, as opposed to a requirement in an increasingly cashless society and for a service industry. Because she seemingly is ignorant of the fact that the TfL now requires black cabs to have card machines installed and are unable to take a fare without one. The Uber/Deliveroo moral crusade nonsense is just that.

Yeah, I picked up on her comment about installing card machines being a burden, and how she likes to pay cash. Good for her! Many more prefer the ease of use of cards and in-app payments. Such a backwards view in modern times.
How about putting customer convenience higher up the list.

All that hatred because of the card machine comment? Surely that’s just a business decision? If it’s worth it they’ll install them, if it’s not they won’t? What am I missing in my ignorance?

I don't think being unaware of TFL policy when your constituency is in Manchester is really a cause for concern, opinions are coloured by personal experience, clearly she thinks most people pay by cash because she does.

In other news Uber reckon to have 730,000 signatures opposing their licence revocation in London, smells a bit off that number quite frankly, I'm guessing they've automatically signed it for anyone whose used Uber within a 100 mile radius of the capital.
