In all honesty by this point the warhammer books are shooting themselves in the arse with their restrictions - theyve put their usual business practices into action (ie milking it for all its worth to the detriment of long term profits)

Gone Girl

Picked it up for a holiday and never got round to reading it so it was sitting on my shelf for almost 3 months before I started last week.

Wish I had read it sooner! Great story, well written characters and I love how the plot intertwines with present day and flashbacks.

Well worth a read for anyone looking for something new.

Chris Nuttall is not a bad author and he's written tons. It's all bubblegum, but nonetheless fun.

Just finished Robert Harris's Cicero trilogy (Imperium, Lustrum, Dictator). If you like historical fiction, you'll love it.

Need to get my hands on Conclave next.

So 40K books (which I've never read btw, but my eldest loves). New 8th edition rulebook is out soon and having abstained from 6th & 7th edition rules, 8th edition has huge changes in the lore, with the Cipher/Roboute Guillame story arcs coming to the fore and a massive rift in the galaxy ripping the Imperium in twain.

To get back into it, where should I tell my son to pick up the stories from?

Dunno, I'm just pissed off that, having read right through all the Gaunt's Ghosts books, I realised I haven't got the last one on my list. Not only that, but it's not out until fucking December!

Currently reading 'And the Weak Suffer What They Must? Europe's crisis, America's economic future' by Yanis Varoufakis. A bit heavy but very educational. I specifically like the history refresher in the first couple of chapters.

Dark Imperium is the newest one set 150ish years after papa smurfs return.

Some good ones to check out are the anthologies Heroes/Legends/Victories/Treacheries of the space marines, and the Space Marines omnibus.

The battles books series is quite good as well The legion of the Damned is a favourite of mine.

The Stars are Legion by Cameron Hurley. An ultimately rather clunky and random amnesia plot but some brilliant concepts around bioengineering and spacefaring civilisation.

The Collapsing Empire by John Scalzi. Pacey sci-fi popcorn with no aspirations of seriousness. Quite short but entertaining.

New York 2140 by Kim Stanley Robinson. Fun crime/finance frame story set in post-climate crisis flooded NYC. Stuffed with KRS's usual obsessively diligent research and passion for the subject. Resolves a little too easily.

Dark Run by Mike Brooks. Derivative Firefly/Expanse-esque pap that overuses the same bad dialogue tropes so often I didn't finish it let alone read the sequel I had intended to go straight onto.

I know what you mean about the Mike Brooks , but I enjoyed it all the same. Kameron Hurley did have some great ideas in it , I'm not convinced it completely held up though. Amusingly I have the other two as well but not touched! I havent replied to this thread in over a year , I suppose it feels too much like work

But stuff I've read

The Transformation Trilogy by Neal Asher comprising Dark Intelligence, War Factory and The Infinity Engine. Honestly Ashers universe is de facto my favourite sci-fi at the moment. From the tech - everything from ftl to nano machines and amazing sounding concepts - to the non humans , the AI's and Prador are just brilliant , I thoroughly loved having more books in the Polity universe. It's dark and dank and dangerous and oh so much fun.

Benedict Jacka - The Alex Verus novels - about a diviner / magician in London , not a million miles away from Jim Butcher and very enjoyable.

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff - it's a young girl trained to be assassin fantasy trope , but it's done very well. I've been patiently waiting on book 2.

Red Sister by Mark Lawrence - new fantasy series , the premise is not a million miles away from the above , but again really good ( probably helped by the fact I had a few months between them )
