RAM - Crosshair 3 Formula

My once mighty PC is ageing, as am I.

I have a Crosshair 3 Formula motherboard and a paltry 4GB RAM.

I now need to spend 40+ to play the Mad Max game I paid 9.99 for.

I've been looking at options of Dual Channel DDR3 1600Mhz.

My questions are as follows:

1. Will 1600 work alright on the board? (Its supposedly supports 1600 O.C.)
2. What's the largest GB stick I can chuck in a single slot?
3. Am I wasting my time upgrading a 5yr old PC with more RAM?

As always, cheers guys.

1. Yes, but only at 1600MHz if you have an AM3 CPU.
2. Probably 4GB per slot, up to a maximum of 16GB. I can't seem to find any 8GB DIMMs that have been tested on this board.
3. Depends on the rest of your parts. If you get DDR3L though, it will still work, and it will be compatible with DDR3L Skylake motherboards if you choose to upgrade in the future.

That'll work, although it has no forward compatibility.

This one is almost the same, but is forward compatible with Skylake.
