F1 2021 concept cars

Looks like F1 are looking at design changes for 2021 and there’s a rather nice car here:

So much for the reduced aero proposal!

How would this work?

Would they be given a body kit design that they can only veer from in limited places e.g. rear diffuser etc?

Fuck knows. I know nothing about F1. Just from talking to a lot of fans that there's a movement to try and get aero reduced so that corners are slowed and the air isn't fucked up behind the car. The theory being that it will reduce cornering speed but also allow stability of the car behind for drafting and more overtaking. Seems sound to me and could only be better for the viewers.

imaginary boxes in certain areas, you can add aero in this area as long as it does not protude from the volume allowed re width, height etc away from the main body.

unless you mean about the car in general, wheels turn = car moves forward

They look nice , but not massively different ? Not compared to some of the concepts from a year or two ago

it looks good but won't be anything like the final car, all form over function. final would unlikely to have any smooth single wings when they've already found using 37 smaller mini wing shapes in the style of an exploded drawing working better than one smooth bit instead aka f1 front wings today

Appears that they are going to do something about the air problems. I didn't just imagine it.

"the sport's technical rulebook is going to be thoroughly revised for the 2021 season in an attempt to cure a number of ills including the inability of one car to follow closely behind another due to the effect of turbulent air."

But is it a good thing?

You'll have the faster cars following the slower ones closely, without consequence, around the bends, and cruising past them on the straights. We may find the issues with turbulent air are making races less dull.

Ferg. That's kind of what motor racing is about. The payoff is that with more evenly matched cars, it comes down to racing line and driver skill to shave time, be able to slipstream and then slingshot around. Like in pretty much every other motor racing event. Surely that's the aim? Track battles. That's the point and is what makes spectacle.

I haven't read the proposals - are they talking about equalising the cars?

If not then I see more skill involved with the turbulence than without it.

Right now people talk about the race often being decided after the start. If turbulence isn't an issue then I can see most races being decided after qualifying.

This isn't a hill I'd die on. I'm just considering the counter argument.

Disagree entirely. With the turbulence, there is no chance for driver skill to allow you to get close enough to overtake.

If you don't believe me (and why would you), maybe read this fellow?

I get that, but I'm not convinced, without equalisation of performance, that you won't simply see the fast car following closely through the corner and cruising past on the straight. You get late breaking battles into corners when cars aren't following closely out of corners, and have to use the straight to make up the distance.

As I say, check that article. It takes lots of factors into its analysis, far more than it's worth me repeating, as I'd get it wrong/forget stuff. It seems to make perfect sense to me, from a layman's perspective. Is also borne out with the results.

I think we're talking at crossed purposes. The article is good and interesting and as far as I can tell entirely factually correct.

Less turbulence, easier following, more overtaking. Which, if we're lucky, will be awesome.

My argument is that if there is less turbulence, drivers will follow each other more easily, and breeze past on the straights. Why risk wheel to wheel action when you know you can stay on the rear wing and overtake in a few corners? My argument is that, when it comes to easier overtaking, we need to be careful what we wish for. I'm not convinced the racing will be more exciting.

Maybe we can get better racing with less turbulence if we harmonise performance, remove blue flags, re-introduce refueling, remove fuel limits. I don't know. But I am sceptical that the races will be more exciting if there's less turbulence.

removing blue flags? wtf. the complaints of deliberate blocking that could ensue if a backmarker didn't get out the way like would make sense. worth it possibly to hear hamilton go apoplectic

f1 couldn't get any duller at this point so changes are worth the risk.
