PPS number and why do I need one?

From Monday, I'll be working at a local BT office on support, employed by a company based in Ireland.

On the paperwork I've just completed and returned, it asks for a PPS number, and suggests that if I don't have one, I need to apply and get one. What the fuck is this shit all about? I've elected to go PAYE btw, rather than flat rate per shift. I just cba with it.

From what I can see, it looks like the Irish version of a NI number, would you need one if you are not actually working there??

welcome to the company

One of these days I should freak Velvet out by walking the 10 foot over to his desk and introducing myself when he's there...

Actually on a 6 month contract via IT Alliance. The word is that 99% these temp contracts generally turn into BT jobs if you can hold your end up, but I'm not sure I cba. The people are sound enough, but it's yet another huge company with red tape and bullshit. Not my thing, unless you have enough clout to get me insta-promoted to some sort of head-cunt.

You become inured to the red tape over time (or rather learn which you should avoid like the plague)

No I've never made it to the heady heights of promoting trickery folks on pure nepotism

Or just politely decline when ever they offer you perm, and submit a higher contract rate next renewal time.

Worked for about 10 years.
