He was probably England's best player, but that's really not saying much.

I still fail to have any care re: Beckham. There must be loads of players who just stopped getting selected, and he must have known it was coming.

lol, palming it off on Baldini to actually tell him too?

Personally I don't have much of a problem with it, in all reality beckham isn't the player he used to be, he's been crocked for ages and he's not going to be the key player in the team now anyway. The bloke's 35 now, how many outfield players for the big international nations are still key players at that age? It'd be like Brazil playing Roberto Carlos - yeah he was awesome, but now he's past it. In fairness I think Capello should have told Beckham in advance and given him the opportunity to announce his own retirement rather than do it like this, but I can imagine Beckham being stubborn enough to not do that anyway, given the itnerview of him post-WC when he seemed adamant that he can still play for England.

I disagree because all players (all people?) develop differently so one 35 year old may well be fitter than a 28 year old with a different type of body etc. I think we rely too much on youngsters these days and we ignore real experience. A classic example is Van Bronkhorst. He's 36 and was as good as any Holland player in the world cup,

The whole thing has worked out jolly well for Becks. He gets to look like a martyr when Capello was hardly saying anything slightly surprising. Becks wasn't quick enough as a 31 year old and he certainly won't be up to scratch at the ripe old age of 37 come Euro '12. Team mascot is about all he's good for.

In terms of the World? Yes, I still think he's up there with the best of them.

That’s the thing about him, off the pitch he’s a complete tool, but on it he’s fantastic.

After this world cup fiasco the consensus of opinion was that we ignored youngsters and that was one of our problems. Becks is past it.

Also another criticism after the world cup was (again) picking players on name not form. Picking Becks would be more of the same shit that caused us to have such a crap world cup and euros...

We need to ditch the rosy eyed soppiness and get ruthless. All the German commentators I saw over the world cup agreed that after their dark days the main things they realised was to be ruthless and only pick on form, what's genuinely good for the team, not the fucking tabloid readers or fanboys..

The fact that Becks was part of the back room staff at the world cup was an embarrassment.

Also worth noting that the German team was altogether lacking in senior players. My German friends tell me that after the disaster of Euro 2000 the Germans undertook an effort to improve youth development of German footballers, which is now starting to show. Could be just a case of seeing history differently now we're in possession of the facts.

Our youngsters seem to hold their own in u17 and u21 international football... I don't agree with the opinion that our youth development is so bad.

I'd rather have taken Beckham to the WC if he was fit than SWP or Carrick. He is still one of the best crossers and set piece takers in the world and for that alone I'd have him to bring on in the last 15 minutes.

Doesn't really matter about his pace or fitness if he's brought on to whip some pin-point crosses in.

This isn't any "rosey-eyed soppiness" I just think he actually is useful as a sub.

I think our young players are looking good though - Johnson, Walcott, Gibbs, Milner, Hart (although after seeing Schmeichel t'other day I wish he was English), Wilshire and even some of the ones that won't play for a few years i.e. Martin Kelly and Victor Moses look like they'll turn into great players for the future.

We're looking a bit short of centre backs though.

Smalling, Gill, Mancienne, Kelly... there are loads of young center backs tbh.

What the fuck was he doing flying in like that in that area of the pitch? What on Earth was he hoping to achieve? Sorry, harsh maybe but no sympathy at all. Fucking stupid tackle!

Bollocks. He slid straight throw him. A less sturdy Arsenal player could have broken an ankle from that tackle.
