How do you unwind?

Hi Guys, 12 months of my company merging with a bigger company are proving a challenge on myself, my team, and those we work with. The uncertainty, posturing, wholesale deconstruction and reconstruction of team structures, cultures and processes that are completely alien to one another have caused sustained stress and anxiety with many of us.

I've never really had issues with this before, but I am suffering a bit at the moment. My daily routine of kids/work/kids/sleep isn't unwinding me. I don't think being home based helps much either - there are no transitions in the day between home and work life.

How do you guys disconnect and relax?

To head the inevitable off, I don't drink or do drugs, and have no intention of starting!

Gym mate, great way to unwind and de-stress.

but in all seriousness you need to find an activity that gets you out of the house where you can switch off. Gym is good. Obviously I'm a rower so I'd recommend that too as it's less time consuming than cycling (which is also great) - as in you can do it in smaller chunks of approx 2hours which fits in better with not eating into your time with the family too much.

If you can also, then set a strict 'no work emails' rule. So after 5pm say, tell people that you'll not be checking work emails until 8am the next day or whatever. Get that work/life balance back

If you don't like to exercise for exercise's sake, try working it into your routine or take up a physical hobby such as a sport or climbing etc.

If I'm running ragged and need to calm down in the moment it is hard to beat sitting in a darkened room with your eyes closed and some relaxing music on.

Whale music and Rocket League, well just Rocket League. Seriously though, if they have any tai chi classes near you, it's supposed to be a good way to fight stress.

Not so much a hobby but there's an app called Headspace which comes with 10 free lessons on meditation. Not at all from a spiritual perspective but just as a way to help manage stress / emotions. I do scuba diving when I get a chance and learning to think and control my breathing helps relax me.

I tend to go for a walk on the beach - any sort of physical excercise will do it. Financial services can be an absolute shitter for stress though so it doesn't always work - I think a lot it ends up being cumulative if your under stress for long enough your body starts to tend that way anyway so you end up in a stressed state more often.

Get a dog ? Forces you out of the house for exercise.

Also walk in nature all you can, for one the colour green is supposed to be very calming to the human mind, as are the sounds of trees swaying in the wind, rivers/streams bubbling or flowing, birds singing, etc. etc. Most guides that try to help with anxiety and depression (both stress related) suggest having a spiritual element, if you're not religious then the power and beauty of nature is as good as it gets. It gives you perspective (i.e. whatever stresses you have, you're just a silly ape scratching out a living on a big rock ball in a big universe).

Thanks Guys - the quantity of helpful replies is better than I hoped for!

I was a regular walker (4.5 miles 5 times a week) throughout the summer but it's difficult when the days become shorter. I'm going to have to make a concerted effort to get out there again - it definitely helps but it's amazing how quickly you forget the difference between doing it and not.

I've also been hovering over the "book" button on a local mindfulness course that start in February for a while now. I think I'll just go and JFDI.

I've never experienced anything like this before. The nuances, even the stupid differences that you'd never even think of, when bringing two companies together are mind boggling. You can have entire conversations and at the end realise you're both talking about two completely different things.

As for the team - don't underestimate the long term costs of poor personal support for them. It's measurable and actionable stuff. We use an HR/Analysis outfit and we're only 100 people. It's been quite an eye opener for us leaders in a few ways and bloody useful for individuals to understand why they're dreading work and unlock improvement rather than just being consumed by it.

Just our example, I'm sure there are plenty of others.

One of our staff owns a shotgun and goes shooting. She says there's nothing quite like it, blowing shit up. I do the same (in a virtual way) - years ago, used to archery (accuracy goes right out the window if you are wound up about stuff) - really want to start it up again.

I've recently taken up shooting actually. Target shooting 2-3 times a week. Air rifle at the moment but plan to progress to air pistol and .22. I don't think I do it enough for it to make a big difference though, unfortunately, and you don't get the "blowing shit up" satisfaction from clay pigeon.

I've done air rifle and .22 and full bore. The rhythm of getting yourself into the same position and state to make a consistent shot can be similar to meditation, but when it isn't going right it is also really bloody stressful so... swings and roundabouts on that one wrt stress!

Sounds like a win.

Though owning a shotty means you have to get interviewed regularly by the fuzz to make sure you aren't loosing your marbles.

I get waves of anxiety and these are the things that help me the most:-

Exercising (I got for a walk into the nearby woods just get my nature fix)
Meditative breathing
Adult coloring books

My better half uses adult colouring books too. Also there's an app she likes for similar, not sure which one but can find out if interested.
