The Lone Ranger.
Flopped at the American box office.
It's missing a lot of humour compared to other Depp films and this spoils it a little.
The story is there and enough to keep you going, the last 20 minutes is glorified by the music.

I'd give it 7/10

Finally got round to watching The Raid: Redemption (Serbuan maut). Balls to the wall action from start to finish. No character development and is a tad cliche, but damn it had some great fights and lot's of killings!

Can't believe I put it off for so long.

9/10.

I've just watched Searching for Sugarman, a documentary about a 70's singer. Really heartwarming stuff, almost shed a tear at the end.
I remember Kermode banging on about it when it was released, I'm pleased that I've got around to watching it.

It's a great documentary, isn't it. I first heard Rodriguez over 20 years ago now, due to his album Cold Fact.

Yeah, even if you're not into the subject matter it's a brilliantly constructed film. I didn't realise he had played Glastonbury this year as well (that may be a bit of a spoiler but nevermind).

Storyline is never a strong point, but this was awful. Why the fuck was there a tank (in a truck) in a convoy transporting a briefcase containing a computer chip? The most pathetically secured convoy ever I hasten to add!

Not only that but they knew all through the movie that they were all excellent drivers and shit, so why not just leave the briefcase at the base, few hundred troops and no fucker is getting it, I only watched it for Vin and that Israeli bird.

This is probably the longest ever discussion about a F&F plotline.

The whole UK thing grated as well, CO19 officers must've spat their tea 'n donuts out! Vauxhall Astra's rock though, who needs a heavily modified custom dowatsit motor to speed through the streets of London?

I don't think they even try for a semblance of making sense, just have it as ridiculous as possible.

I love being able to switch my brain off, even shake my head a little at points.

The bit that stuck out for me, how long was that runway?

Longest runway ever, or is it the only oval runway on the planet?!

On a good note, Statham is coming to put them all out of their misery...

Furious 6 - 4/10

The usual from any of the F&F lot, shit acting with story to match, OTT cars and quite possibly the longest runway known to man.

Olympus has fallen - 5.5/10

John McClane meets Rambo in the white house! Turn the brain off and watch

Olympus Has Fallen, 5/10. Silly but generally entertaining enough. Lots of really stupid "as if" moments though that stop it getting 6/10.

GI Joe Retaliation, 3/10. Not as good as the first, although the motorbike missile is awesome.

I started to watch the Evil Dead remake but only made it about 10mins in. I'll give it another go but it completely fails to capture the mood of the original and I don't know that I want a more polished remake to be honest!

Yeah but there's shit/good and shit/shit. The OTT stuff can be great when it gets a smiley WTF! moment, but these were more of a groan, FFS, WTF moments!

If you haven't seen it already, check out Shut Up and Play the Hits, it's a rockumentary featuring the lead up and performance of LCD Soundsystems last gig.
James Murphy comes across as such a lovely bloke in the film and the live stuff is fucking brilliant!

Watched The Grandmaster and Chungking Express, both get a solid 5/5, loved the cinematography of The Grandmaster, while it isn't as "kickass" as the previous Ip Man films with Donnie Yen, it still packed a punch. I still think Fallen Angels is the best Wong Kar Wai film, closely followed by In The Mood For Love

Other films I've watched recently...

The Last Stand - 2/5
Bullet to the Head - 2/5
A Good Day to Die Hard - 0/5
Dead Man Down - 2.9/5
G.I. Joe: Retaliation - 2/5 (much better than the first...)
Olympus Has Fallen - 2.5/5 (pretty brutal in places and how Die Hard 5 should have been)

As for Furious 6, I liked it, it does what it says on the tin, you're not going to expect Oscar winning performances or a thought provoking story, just mindless good fun. Though the recent instalments have gone a bit silly under Justin Lin's direction and has diverted so much from the original (which he also directed), to be merely a bunch of "Italian Job" copies. James Wan (Saw, Insidious etc.) is taking the helm for the final one, so will be interesting (well those to who are fans of the series) to see how it all ends...

Another gripe is the whole Han going to Tokyo storyline, which has been screwed up, he appeared for a very short scene in F&F 4 saying he needed to go to Tokyo to sort some business out. Then all of a sudden they slapped him back in in F5 and F6 (apparently back due to popular demand), and shoe horned that whole romance story. If anything, after F6 it makes his reason going to Tokyo even more pointless?! especially as he ends up going to babysit some Yakuza (Korean) gangster.

Koyaanisqatsi - defies rating tbh

Forgot all about this film, which I first saw when it came out about 30 years ago. Someone reminded me about it, so I acquired a copy and rewatched it. Stunning if you like that sort of thing, utter shit if you don't.

Not seen it, but I'd say that FF6 deserves more than four simply 'cos it has a Mk1 Escort in it

Gallowwalkers ?/5 I really cannot decide if it's shit or a strange piece of cinematic genius.

Snipes' performance is just ....weird, but then I think it's meant to be.

Evil Dead (2013), 3/5. It's not an Evil Dead film, but it has some nice gross out moments. I must admit the final scene made me laugh out loud.

Frankenstein's Army, 2/5. Low budget silliness, with an fps feel to it.

Holy shit. Just watched Europa Report. Sci-fi film with actual science about a mission to Jupiter's moon Europa. High suspense. 9/10.

Next up: Only God Forgives.

Only God Forgives is a very marmite film. I personally loved it, it is very stylised and it shows you a lot without explaining anything. I thought Gosling's performance was great in it too, despite having only 32 lines.

I made it about 30 mins into the film, before I lost interest. Perhaps I wasn't in the mood, or disliked the 'arty' nature of it (actually arty, non pron). That said, it is very stylised. Might give it another go.
