The annoying thing is in the trailers for the film they had a clip of them facing off with each other so I was expecting to see it, cunts

Most people don't think it's brilliant, they believe it's the second coming for movies. I realise it's all a matter of taste, but I was truly bored for every second, it was without a doubt the weakest of the three. I agree with Nap in that it's the worst most extremely popular series, and again that most are just fervent lovers of it.

No way, Two Towers was the weakest by far (same with the books though).

I don't think it flowed as nicely as the other two, mainly because they'd got so much stuff left to fit in.

[edit] The Two Towers has ents! Ents I say!

Liam Neeson almost ruined it with his total lack of charisma but apart from that Batman Begins was very good.

I agree, LOTR shouldn't be in the top 50. Heck, I think I could've died of boredom watching either of the 3.

I thought Batman Begins was brilliant, couldn't fault it, but not sure if it should be in the Top 50. If we're wanting a superhero film in the top 50, I'm thinking the original Tim Burtons Batman. It's aged so well.

My opinion....

3. Ronin Delete. Run of the mill action film. Replace with Point Blank. Lee Marvin. Tough guy extraordinaire in hard booted thriller

5. HEAT Great film but not essential. Replace with Videodrome. No Cronenberg in the list yet.

8. Reservoir Dogs Delete. Think one Tarantino film is enough. Replace with 12 Angry Men. Excellent performances all round in a one room, dialogue driven film.

13. The Lord of the Rings trilogy Delete. Everyones seen it and knows how good it is. Replace with Network. Excellent satire that was quite ahead of its time and still works today. I'm mad as hell and not gonna take this anymore!!!

14. Saving Private Ryan Delete. Apart from excellent battles, same war film as 100 others. Replace with The Killing Fields. Packs a hell of a punch

15. Goodfellas Delete. Although there is another Scorcese film in the list, I'd put Taxi Driver in instead

16. The Matrix Delete. Everyones seen it and knows how good it is. Replace with Barton Fink. No Coen brothers in the list.

35 - Mulholland Drive - Delete. My own suggestion, but I reckon replace with Blue Velvet as the Lynch film

40. The good the Bad the Ugly Delete. Over Once Upon A Time In The West already listed. Replace with If... . Classic anti-establishment. Britains film of rebellion.

43. King Kong Delete. I'd say Jason And The Argonauts already listed should take its place. Replace with Chinatown

48 Star Wars Delete. Everyones seen it. Replace with 2001 - A Space Odyssey as the space film. Needs to be experienced at least once

50 Schlinder's List Delete. If we are going to have Spielberg, I say put in Deul. Expertly crafted film, dripping tension from limited resources.

Others to consider, had a look through my video collection (DVD's are packed away)...

Night Of The Hunter
Scarecrow
Straw Dogs
The Third Man

2001 is overated wank tbh - and im a sci-fi fan!

Cant believe that people rate Batman begins!!

First half is ok with the ninja training etc but the second half? What a load of camp over the top BS.....

Saving Ryan had unprecedented groundbreaking action scenes (at least id never seen better until then) - but i agree it should come out if were going for a "worthy but obscure" list.

That film on Ch4's list "come and see" looked like schindlers list - something you need to watch at least once - if not nessecarily enjoy or repeatedly watch.

The Killing Fields is better than Saving Private Ryan and Duel is better than Schindlers List anyway.... obscure or not.

2001 overrated wank ???? Go and wash your mouth out !

Sorry Ham 2nd half i almost walked out m8.....

2001 just tooo slowwwwwwwww......*ZZZZZzzzzzzzz*

Lets have 15 minutes of acid flashback light show with him sitting at table getting older. The only person who couldve been more bored the then audience wouldve been that asrtonaut - sitting in the same room for X number of years. With not even the intraweb to keep him happy......

Whats the point in removing a film that people will have seen from a list of 50 all time must see movies? So what if people have, why replace with obscure alternatives?

Following from the logic above, if LOTR sends people to sleep, 2001 will do too. Sure, 2001 is a good film, but it’s not what I’d class as a great cinematic experience and could quite happily have lived a contented life without having seen it.

As for Batman Begins, a good action film, but its really not a top 50 must see

LOTR totally ROCKS! EE ROTK = total ownage!!!

Mouth of sauron getting his head lopped off - 'AVE it!!

Infact all this talk has given me a hankering to watch the full EE trilogy again.....

I bet the schism is gonna be between fans of the books (who'll probably love all the extras in EE and wanted more) and just film fans who dont understand what the fuss is and wanted everything shorter. Jackson HAD to cut out large parts of the book - even some great fights - to make a manageable film......

This list is just going to come down to a list of personal preferences. “It’s shit” is a great justification for something not being included.

Yes, it was long, and some parts were dull, but sheer scale and complexity of the project warrants it being in there

It was over-sentimental, especially the final one, some of the leading actors were poor (Wood? Bloom..? that bloody lass out of Armageddon), poorly edited (many mention missed fight scenes, yet over the top, overly long sentimental or diplomatic scenes were included) and above all, due to all of this, incredibly tedious.

The trilogy wasn't shit, but it certainly, absolutely 100%, is not good enough to warrant the type of attention it receives; Return of the King is #4 in the IMDB top 250 films of all time for God's sake. I remember at one point them being as good as #s 2,3 and 4. At least now people have sense and they're dropping down the chart.

It is one of those series that I completely forget about once I've watched them. They don't linger in my memory, I don't reminisce about great parts of the film because frankly any decent part is sucked out of you by the memory you have of sitting there bored out of your skull. The first I would say was the best of the lot, the second was a bit toss with that over the top fight scene and remember the shoddy blue screen on those trees, and the final one was just awful. However, I'm potentially being unfair to the final one, as I have only ever watched the extended edition, and you all know my feelings on that, but I doubt losing an hour would change my feelings much on it.

Had it been Jackson's scholastic creation I would agree on the magnitude of the film, but it wasn't. It was a great achievement to put a book of such magnitude into a movie, but with the detail of the book he almost had a blueprint. The main challenge was the money needed to make it, which he had in abundance. I think it probably should be there so people can make their own minds up on it as I do believe it's one of those series you either love or hate.

Now if anyone feels strongly enough to pierce my stomach with a magic sword, let it be known I have a type 27 shield.

It's funny, Alexander was on Sky Movies on Saturday, and the above is exactly how I'd describe that film (I edited your quote slightly to fit)

I am not judging them by whether they are good. I think all the ones I think should be deleted are great/excellent films, that I have suggested be replaced by underwatched or underappreciated great/excellent films.

Thats the point.

e.g Black Narcissus was in the Film4 list. I had never heard of it before, I have never seen it in any Greatest Films Of All Time list, yet it was ranked high in the Film4 programme. It looked interesting, it sounded interesting, ergo I'll try and watch it before I die.

I would watch Star Wars (one of my favourite films) over 2001 most of the time. I would watch The Matrix over Barton Fink most of the time. I'm not sure how many of the ones I listed would count as my favourite films ever. But that doesn't mean they are not brillant or important by their own right.

So, if you haven't seen any of those films I've listed, then I think you HAVE to see...

Point Blank
Videodrome
12 Angry Men
Network
The Killing Fields
Taxi Driver
Barton Fink
Blue Velvet
If...
Chinatown
2001 - A Space Odyssey
Deul
Night Of The Hunter
Scarecrow
Straw Dogs
The Third Man

...before you die.
