Not too impressed with it (spec wise) to be honest as I was expecting more. I've got a meeting in the next few days which will either involve me having a go or finding out when I've to have a go Apple are a shambles when it comes to testing devices before launch so hopefully I get it this week.

Noo, I'm already on a contract with T-Mo, but get discount for not having a handset with them.

No O2 signal here unfortunately, and I wouldn't touch Orange again evar! Voda, just expensive for what you get.

I've had an attack of 1st world guilt over this (and other electronics), for the folks that make them over in that massive factory. I'm pretty sure it will pass though - can anyone help me get over it?

Apple should be fucking ashamed of the last ten years at Foxconn. Sitting on 4 billion quid whilst mothers and fathers in manufacturing are committing suicide on a monthly basis. The factory has now been pressured into addressing it's problems and is giving pretty much all workers an average of a 70% payrise. No fucking help from Apple in that process mind.

Correct me if I am wrong... But don't Foxconn manufacture other items for a mass of other major blue chip companies?

To quote Wikipedia:-

Foxconn is the largest manufacturer of electronics and computer components worldwide and mainly manufactures on contract to other companies. Among other things, Foxconn produces the Mac mini, the iPod, the iPad, and the iPhone for Apple Inc.; Intel-branded motherboards for Intel Corp.; various orders for American computer manufacturers Dell and Hewlett-Packard; motherboards for UK computer manufacturer Zoostorm; the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 for Sony; the Wii for Nintendo; the Xbox 360 for Microsoft, cell phones for Motorola, the Amazon Kindle, and Cisco equipment.

To throw blame solely on Apple Corporation for the recent spate of suicides within the company is wholly inappropriate and severly misguided, like the media reports on the events in Foxconn, why Apple have been singled out is mystifying to me.

Because the Shenzen facility that was extended solely to service the apple components contract is where all the suicides have been happening and the first press-worthy suicide was of a worker who was beaten and investigated following his loss of an iphone prototype. Apple did fuck all to follow that up.

From reports it was stated:-

In total, there have been 13 suicides and suicide attempts at Foxconn factories this year.

Not just the factory that manufactured Apple devices, but other factories, have we seen representatives from other companies making any statement or effort like Apple have?

If anything Steve Jobs has to be commended for actually being seen to acknowledge this and to try and improve matters...

Not disgraced.

Unlike Apple, none of the others had the bare faced cheek to claim ignorance. In fact Steve first said;

Quote:
“You go in this place and it’s a factory but, my gosh, they’ve got restaurants and movie theatres and hospitals and swimming pools. For a factory, it’s pretty nice.”

I don't see ignorance in that statement at all... I see a CEO of a company observing what the conditions are actually like, he couldn't lie about this as the media would be on him like a ton of bricks wouldn't they?

I am sure if he went into some shithole, sweatbox of a factory in India knocking out cheap T shirts for Nike, George, Gap and the rest of them he would have a completely different aspect of the working environment and would comment with respect to this.

And anyways what's a "press worthy suicide" when it's at home?

Not wanting to callous here but surely in the modern World, work induced suicides are probably a whole lot more common than we are aware of...

I think the whole matter is a case of shit flinging for some reason and to see if it sticks, as for story of the beaten worker has this been proved?

Compared to the aforementioned factories in India, South America and other nations it won't be...

It will be a modern clean factory (it has to be, it is manufacturing high end electronics) with a modicum of facilities for the workers (toilets, food, etc).

I am not saying the work they are carrying out will be fulfilling, but I bet you the conditions are a damn sight better than real "sweatshops" out there with their mulititude of suicides and the lowest of low to endure as a human being

Which incidentaly you never see getting the attention that this has do you?

Shit fliniging it is, that's all.

Well fortunately for the aforementioned workers, Apple and other key clients of the relevant facilities now agree with me, and not you and have insisted on a massive culture shift and the payrises I mentioned.

http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/ste...53644f522.html

Regardless of how many of Foxconns clients share the responsibility - key clients call the shots and should have done so a year earlier at the bare minimum.

Yes, yes you do by the way. From a wide variety of global and regional human/workers rights groups. This reminds me very much of the "Why don't the WHO do something about cancer for a change" conversation where "You don't see xxx happening" equates to "Russ doesn't read the news enough before flapping his trap".

Looking at the above you are now backing off from laying it all on the doorstep of Apple Corporation and taking the wider view then Matt?

Still think it's a bit callous of you to just dismiss the suicides Sys. Whether the conditions are 'better' - they're still a sweatshop. Just a high tec one.

A gilded cage is still a cage, to use a slightly different analogy that has a similar tenet. It's probably an economic one [cage] too.

Anyway, as I said, it will probably pass the next time I like the look of something shiny and expensive, to my shame.

You did single out Apple for being ashamed Nersh... Cisco's used them for years and is sitting on over $25 billion.. I can't find any mention of them condemning Foxcomm or saying they have asked the partner to change.

Russ does have a point...

I never narrowed the view, I said that they could have done something sooner, didn't, and should be ashamed. I really think you should have a good long look at which factories produce for which clients before proceeding. The problems are very specifically at the apple manufacturing facilities. They don't make anything else. The wider Hon Hai Group do indeed have other clients but the people we're talkiing about produce apple apple and more apple.

Your wrong...

(again)

I haven't seen a sweatshop suicide making the headlines ever in the media to this level and I don't think we will.

I am not passing comment on "global and regional human/workers rights groups" which I know damn well are doing their utmost to improve conditions for the poor bastards out there, I am passing comment on the media and their coverage of all this.

I shall repeat:-

It is nothing but a shit flinging exercise from the media to attack a very very prominent Worldwide blue chip company that unfortunately has had an association with one of the workers at Foxconn who took their life.

Either due to the either rightly or wrongly reported iPhone incident or to get the compensation for the rest of the employee's family, both reasons I find hard to swallow as fact.
