How does it work?

I have an idea to try and get more traffic to my site. The idea is for example, if i buy the domain www.apple.uk.com, does that mean that if someone types in "apple" in to say google, i have a great chance that my domain would come up on first page, maybe below www.apple.com and then direct them to my site possibly?

my idea isnt to do "apple" products, i was just using them as an example most of you are familiar with. will this work though in theory?

Here's something I wrote for another forum (may be slightly out of date, but it's basically sound):

Quote:
One of the best ways to increase your rank in Google is to have links from other, relevant web sites - the more the merrier. When I say relevant I mean that if you sell potatoes on-line, then a link from the Oxfordshire Potato-Sellers Guild website will count more in your favour than one from a scrap merchant in Leeds' site.

Make sure the important bits of your content have prominence on your site (for instance having the word "potato" in your page's title, or the word in a bold heading on your page), but don't spam by repeating the word "potato" 200 times in white text on a white background - you'll get dumped out of the index. Also, don't put your important content in Flash graphics or in images, as search engines won't be able to see it.

Also, if you are a local supplier, make sure you mention town/county etc. on your pages. You are far more likely to be up there in the rankings if someone searches for "potato supplier chipping norton" if your web site mentions Chipping Norton prominently.

What it boils down to is that having well thought-out, relevant content is going to count much in your favour. You might also want to consider Google Adwords, where you buy certain keywords and they become the sponsored links you see on the search page.

Oh, and don't have a product whose name is the same as something much more popular - I used to work for a firm that, amongst other things, sold consultancy based around a piece of software called "HEAT", which was completely overwhelmed in search engine rankings by Heat Magazine!

There's a whole field of professionals in this business aren't there? Search Engine Optimisation or some such. I imagine they're probably all over this shit - to the extent you haven't got a chance with the oldest trick in the book.

It's not really much of an idea in the first place. SEO is a lot more complicated than having a somewhat similar URL.

Erm yeah basically - sorry I didn't mean to be harsh! But let's be honest these guys have been working on this stuff for years. They would in all likelihood have covered the whole 'similar domain name' idea pretty early on.

I know Yahoo and Google have their own teams of SEO specialists that do this sort of stuff for their partners and corporates - they were so valuable we sent a bunch of them to Switzerland.

This thread has given me a superb idea though. People like tunes right? What if we could sell those tunes, online. People could avoid the inconvenience of having to buy and rip cd's and instead could download the tunes directly to their computers either as whole albums, or just single tracks. Obviously I'll need some startup capital so if you have funds and want to make some serious money PM me. No timewasters.

I would imagine SEO specialists are so far ahead of everyone else, they are already working on making IPv6 sites rank higher than IPv4 sites before anyone even thinks its possible.

If your site is likely to make quite a bit of money out of having a higher pagerank/clickthrough rate, then paying someone is worth it. No amount of time dedicated to learning SEO will gain anything near what a specialist can do.

I've learnt less than 10% of SEO and how to do it and have managed to get a brand new domain rank higher than one that had been going for 5 years in less than 4 weeks. Its the other 90% of skill that reaps the rewards.

I'm happy to look over the site and give you some ideas/identify any problems if you want (no charge).

The main reason SEO consultants are needed is things literally change daily with the search engines and whilst one thing worked yesterday, tomorrow it could get you banned; your paying for that kind of knowledge. That and connections of course, not many people can get you relevant, in content, do follow links on UK newspaper websites

A big part of SEO/SEM is also the initial keyword research, researching what people actually search for (no point ranking well for a search term if nobody searches for it), identifying the keywords with less competition and those which will offer the best return on investment. It's better to rank well for 100 x 3 to 5 word search phrases (i.e. blue widgets with cheese) which get 10 searches each a day than for a 1 or 2 word phrase (i.e. widgets) that get 1000 searches a day.
Spreads your bets a little if you get knocked out the top spots for certain terms, you still have fallback ones. Plus the traffic is generally much more targeted so your conversion ration is much higher.

The website needs to be technically valid (passes the W3C validator), there are best practices around internal linking structures, page structure, keyword density, content frequency e.t.c which are also a key elements.

As others have mentioned, link building is also a major part for ranking well. It used to be as simple as chucking a few thousand (or million) links at a site to get it ranked, but this now gets you banned very quickly if you get it wrong. Paid links can now be detected so you shouldn't go overboard, but if you are prepared to take the small risk of a ban then paid links are still very effective if done properly.

You want links from relevant websites to your industry, preferably within some content which is also relevant are ideal. The text that links to your site (anchor text) should match the keywords are targeting; but you must vary it otherwise you'll get penalised for link spamming.

Most important however is content, you want lots of good, unique, relevant and frequently added to/updated content. Blogs work wonders if implemented correctly and updated often.

I don't think every area has already been thought of, plenty of niche markets still out their to be had. Alot of industry's are however saturated. Can get very expensive if your competitors are actively doing SEO, can turn into a bit of a war sometimes fighting for the top spots.

nice pram. removed the "annoying sig" lol.

EDIT: I only did the white colouring to create a space around the link. I couldnt find code for making clear lines, so had to improvise by writing in white.
