Treating myself to an SSD

http://www.dabs.com/products/crucial...=4294948431-12

Looking at this one, anyone have it and can comment? Will be using it with Win7 Ultimate.

I dont have that one, I have this one. I got it for Christmas so its still very early days yet to wax lyrical, but the speed increase is just nuts. I installed Mozilla Firefox as one of the first things I did on my new system. It took 2 seconds. Literally.

Programs load faster, things install faster, Windows loads (MUCH) faster and shuts down faster..... etc Its a great upgrade, cant recommend it enough.

(Using it with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit)

The write speed on that crucial one is tripe Burundi.

tbh, at the current price per gig why bother? Just so that windows will boot quicker... apparently the prices are going to drop into next year.

Write speed on the crucial one is indeed gash - looking at this one now: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/60gb-...-write-275mb-s which happens to be the same series that you bought minty, just a smaller capacity.

A new generation of SSDs is due out during Q1 next year if you can wait.

It does everything quicker, not just booting windows. Like for example, you know when you use your media player and it takes a few seconds to load up before the file plays? I dont. Not anymore anyway. Its instantaneous.

The whole point of upgrading is to make your PC faster or more powerful (or both) and this does that exceptionally well.

I'm buying before the vat increase and I need the performance boost now, I'm running a 400gb samsung hdd which I think is running at 5400 rpm, Minecraft performance is poor to say the least and windows definitely needs help.

I could buy a bigger faster hdd but it's speed I need not storage capacity, I'll no doubt keep the samsung as a second drive.

Plus the time, plus the fact the new ones will be quite expensive. Any SSD I get at this point will be orders of magnitude better than what I have now.

whoever thinks that the new prices from 4th Jan will only go up 2.5% is gonna be in for a suprise. from what i read costs of raw materials/metals are increasing and the exchange rates are not in our favour, so things are going up more than 2.5%.

I know some of our products at 829 are going to be 915 come jan 4th. they are sneaking prices up i tell you!

I've had my ssd for about a year now and couldn't live without it.
One thing I've noticed is even just using it as a boot drive I seem to be in online games before anyone else, and the rest of my spec isnt anything to write home about these days.
Everything is just a lot snappier.

i love my SSD, but 80gb is nothing, and i think i need another SSD to put alongside my one and the HDD i have. gonna wait to see what the new SSDs all about.

performance is stupidly quick. i love the quick start ups straight into desktop. programs open up instantly!

With all due respect to what everyone has said about these drives, reading reviews from recognised hardware houses, and having used them first hand in systems at work, anyone who thinks there is that much of a noticeable difference that could warrant the /gig compared to a SATA-II equivalent for average home usage is sadly delusional... you carry on waving your epenis about

I would buy SSD if I had more tin that a tin miner in Tintagel, but I live in the real world, and anyway, as I said earlier in the thread, SSD are due a price drop next year.

Current pricing;

SSD ~200 for a decent 120GB.
HDD ~70 for 2 x 1TB SATA-II in RAID 0 = comparable speeds to SSD.
HDD ~100 for 500GB SATA hybrid = almost same speed as SSD.
HDD ~150 for 2TB SATA 6Gb/s

Just call me a grumpy old man

I never saw it as a /GB issue. I wanted noticeable increase in speed... simple as that.
Getting to a game of TF2 in less than 30 seconds rather than over 1 min plus the whole boot speed/ app launch speed/responsiveness was what I wanted.
The 160GB Intel X25-M G2 sure did that. Now it's sitting in an external FW800 enclosure ready to be tested for OSX nippiness

I have ~25-30GB for OS and ~150GB for games, the misses and kids use the PC as well, so it would cost me a fortune to go SSD at the moment, I'm counting on the price drop as SSD become more popular.

So why did you remove it from your pc then groovy and what did you replace it with?
What's preventing you plugging it in to your mac, case colours clashing?

I sold the PC - not been using it since I got the Mac - and didn't want to let the SSD go.
Disk enclosure plugged in... just waiting on me not being a lazy bast to install OSX from scratch!

urrgh, write speed as mentioned above

I'm going to buy one of these

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/225416...edium=products
http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/5759...EGUnxMQ3NeWg==

when I get some money sorted
I have a kingston V+ 64mb in my main computer
I want to speed up my laptop though as I use it a lot

I only got a 64gb one but it's mostly full now with windows and steam on it.
I'd ideally like a way to split the steam install as I run CSS a lot but not the other programs as much

Unreliable pieces of shit. The extra speed of an SSD might save you 30 minutes in a week. Reinstalling after yet another SSD fucks up will lose you several times that.

Save your money and spend it on a couple of Raptors. If you still don't give a shit about your data you could stripe them.

Then surely your games don't benefit from the SSD? They are loading into memory from your secondary HDD...

LOL it takes all of ten minutes or less to install OS X...

Admittedly it will take longer to restore your backup from Time Machine, maybe an hour or so, but no more than a hour and a half at the most!

Get it done you lazy bast!

i was questioning what you said funkeh, but i think i agree with you in some way, maybe coz i think windows being on my SSD helps process the games to open, even though on HDD?

and again, ive had no problems with my SSD so far either tbh.

It's because of your windows swap file or paging file, whatever there calling it these days. I'm guessing your swap file is still hosted on the windows boot drive? If so the greatly improved game loading speeds are mainly down to the better read write speed of the SSD. The game can be loading and at the same time your C: drive is dumping up loading the swap file, because this is done on 2 separate drives it speed things up rather than queue's them.

Also for the gig's per argument, surely that's only relevant if the person buying the drive has no disposable income? If someone can afford the extra money it costs for the SSD then why shouldn't they?
