EDIT: one thing ive noticed about you QT, is that you never forget what people say and bring it up in future threads, not bad for an old bloke half way through his life.

If you have the graphical settings turned way down the game will load shitloads faster due to it not having to load more detailed texture maps. Or something.

If it's any use, I have recently bought a Corsair F90 FW2.0 (90GB) and it is ludicrously quick! 270MB Read & Write. They do a 60GB variant using the same Sandforce 1200 controller. Highly recommended

Just ran this test now:

Sensors readings are wrong - C2 isn't temperature, common on alot of SSD/controllers I believe.

Well, I've ordered the 60gb OCZ Vertex 2 from dabs at £93 delivered.

I appreciate that the next gen will be quicker and probably larger but I also don't have a 6gbps sata connector on my mobo so I think the main benefits will be lost to me, storage space isn't a big issue, it's speed and a much reduced read time for the thousands of chunk files that minecraft creates, these will be immediately improved by an ssd and make it more enjoyable to play - and that's what counts.

I went with the Vertex too. It's currently being held in place by a single screw as Dell make shit inaccessible cases. It would be a cause for concern if they had ANY MOVING PARTS so, I'm not too fussed. Boot time factoring in the RAID nonsense pre-windows is about a minute and I've put office and PhotoShop in there too so they load in a shake of a slightly retarded lamb's tail. Pre-install, the windows experience was about a 6.5, afterwards it's a 7.2 with the SSD still being the bottleneck. It'd be a 7.6 or something otherwise.

incorrect ssd orientation then, turn it over and re-attach, you have to pay attention to the way up indicators

//traditional hdds don't have this as an issue due to their spinny nature, no matter what the orientation is, gyroscopic forces are a constant.

the nice thing about these I think is that you can whack in another one and raid them when the first one runs out of room

for gaming my SSD on my main PC makes a huge difference. very very handy, maps load quicker, textures caching etc..

I suspect they split the data they are writing across multiple ram chips inside the ssd, making reading and writing a lot quicker than the individual chips are capable of alone.

In normal operation they directly replace your hdd, no raid or anything required but they can also be raided like normal hdd's

That's a good compromise between storage and ssd like performance for a single drive solution for a laptop.

I keep thinking about another ssd, this time for my little Acer Aspire One, it should help speed it up a lot and improve the battery life, but there's too many other things I want to buy at the moment that I don't have the money for :/

Same here ... keeping control of spending, that is.

My reason for wanting one for work laptop is that I've got the Win7 SOE build for work, and I'm able to install it myself. But would rather take out existing hard disk, so I haven't lost everything if it goes titsup.

I recently opened up my dell and realised there was a 2nd HDD bay in it....although I need a really awkward connector to make it work properly. I think it's about 15 quid in itself. however, will probs just get a decent monitor for my home PC can go back to that with it's SSD goodness!

that Momentus XT looks good
basically there was a desktop version of that wasn't there where you use a small SSD into a special caddy which then melds to the primary HDD and hybridises from there.
nifty stuff, for a laptop that's a great invention!
reliable?

I do, but hard disk is encrypted, so I couldn't do a block level backup or restore.
