Investments

I missed out on two incredibly massive investments last year. One was RBS which I clda bought for 10p now between 40-50p. And the next was BP selling at 302p just as I was gonna buy, but was away on trip for a while. Clda quadrupled and doubled my money easily

Anyone recently invested in any companies or has any recommendations???? Some people say China, others say gold.

Results-oriented thinking

Anyone with little to no knowledge of security analysis would be silly to invest in anything other than index funds imo (stock market wise).

I've started dabbling with this, just FTSE 250 equities purchased through an investment ISA which I expect is the best way (i.e. tax efficient) for most people to invest in stocks.

Being quite risk-averse, as I have bugger all money, I tend to look at defensive stocks with solid dividend yields (that is the dividend as a proportion of the stock price). Even with ocassional capital losses, if the portfolio is sufficiently diversifed (i.e. 10 or so stocks in different sectors) the returns in comparison to leaving your cash in a depository account are still far more attractive.

Why not just put your money into a FTSE100 index fund or something, accept the 8% average return and save yourself the hassle?

Part of the reason is that I am genuinely interested in equity analysis - and it is something I might try to do professionally. From that perspective, it makes quite a lot of sense for me to at least try it for myself and actually test out some of my theories.

I quite agree though - if you're not interested in the hassle of keeping up to date with news etc. then there are far poorer ways to invest than through a portfolio of funds, managed by people who do it professionally and have the necessary competitive advantages.

I had an ISA that was supposed to be in a managed fund. It dropped in value like a brick, and hardly even got back to the original input value ... I'd seriously have been far better off sticking it in a sock.

The vast majority of actively managed funds are awful i.e. under-perform the market over a decent period of time. They also charge a lot more in fees. You can get a major index fund for 0.5% a year last time I checked.

An investment ISA is just a government scheme designed to incetivise public saving by eliminating income and capital gains tax arising on the ownership and disposal of qualifying investments. If you are investing in stocks and shares, chances are that this is the appropriate way of going about it - but you will still need to decide how to choose a fund. Most funds will have exposure of some description (to a specific geographic area, certain types of stock etc.). You will need to diversify across funds in order to achieve an averaged market return.

Pairs trading is where it's at.

Oh, and technical analysis of the stock market is absolute fucking bollocks.

edit: although i'll admit that pairs trading can actually be very very profitable, if you have absolutely insane amounts of capital to start with and stick with safe bets like oil companies etc. if you're just dabbling in it, it's daft.

Over the last couple of years my shares in Centrica, BA, Barclays and Vodafone have done well

I sold shares in SSL before RB finally made a takeover move, which tripled the share price :/

DSG International, an unmitigated disaster, after buying at their lowest price for years, the value dropped another 70%!

For me, it's a long term plan, automatically investing dividends in more shares.

I'd keep an eye on Apple for the next few days - Steve Jobs is on 'medical leave'

The last time that happened it wiped 2 billion dollars off the value of the company for a few months - which of course they made back pretty quickly.

Might be worth seeing if they go down significantly enough to be worth buying a few shares with the expectation of a recovery

^ You have to have so much invested to have a chance to win anything significant. You're much better off investing it in shares.
