"indisputable scientific evidence" that prayer doesn't work plx

http://www.totalpolitics.com/blog/31...9-ad-ban.thtml

I have no particular beef with people believing whatever they want, but when you're an MP then I expect you to at least have some grasp of why this makes no sense.

how dare you question the power of our lord!

so long as our lord has immediate access to onsite medical staff, top notch defibulators, an ambulance on standby, a specialist cardiologist in the crowd - then his powers to heal are incredible!

I put in a complaint to the ASA when the god botherers launched their response to the "There probably isn't a god" campaign by the Dawkins contingent (which also received complaints) and was told that as the advertisers were a charity they could pretty much say what they liked.

Frankly anyone who is swayed to believe what adverts tell them has got too much pro-vitamin beta-caroteine complex in their system and probably shouldn't be allowed their 6-bladed razor for fear of harming themselves, or their toothbrush with integral tongue and cheek scraper for fear of choking.

Phew, good to know that while all the doctors and nurses were busy running around Benny Hill style, fornicating in the supply closets and generally twatting around wearing clown costumes, that God intervened and did his thing because it was prayed for.

Don't know about anyone else but i'm going to sleep soundly tonight with that knowledge.

I think they are covered by different legislation that falls outside the remit of the ASA - as they're not selling anything per se.

You might be interested to know that I (Gary Streeter) received divine healing myself at a church meeting in 1983 on my right hand, which was in pain for many years. After prayer at that meeting, my hand was immediately free from pain and has been ever since. What does the ASA say about that? I would be the first to accept that prayed for people do not always get healed, but sometimes they do. That is all this sincere group of Christians in Bath are claiming.
This stems from all the bullshit that when there's a tragedy, talking heads trot out the 'Our prayers are with you" bullshit. Until that can be stopped, this sort of thing will always gain traction.

What balls.

Typically those talking heads are attached to the bodies of world leaders - all of whom seem to be god-botherers. Seriously, when are people going to wake the fuck up?

God botherer:

Something goes well - Thank God!
Something goes badly - God is punishing me... what did I do?

Rational, reasonable, normal human being:

Something goes well - Yay! Go me.
Something goes badly - Well, shit. Better luck next time.

Granted I threw in the concept of "luck" in that last one but that's more a figure of speech than belief in luck/fate blahdee blah fucking blah.

If they want Scientific evidence it doesn't work, round up say a few thousand volunteers who believe in this and then inject them all with some terminal illness with no cure and say a 3-4 month life expectancy, and then lets see how many of them survive with their prayers

At least we don't have anyone like Mitt Romney who, despite being a card-carrying Mormon, is likely to win the race to win the Republican Presidential nomination.

The Templeton Foundation (A religious organisation) did a study in 2006. They tested over 1,800 patients that were having heart operations and organised them into 3 groups. One group that was not going to be prayed for, 1 group that was and 1 group that was going to be prayed for, but not told that they were.

The study found that not only is there no difference in recovery and complications arising from surgery between the groups, but you may actually be better off NOT being prayed for.

Science > Religion

That would not show that prayer never works, only that it didn't work in that instance. Which is why it's up to believers to show that it does work, not the other way around.

P.S. If anyone does not agree with the above, then I'll want to see your evidence that you don't owe me 10 million pounds.

Having been a member of a "church" for a number of very stupid years, I can honestly lay claim to a greater justification for hating religious fucking whack jobs. And I don't just mean "cults". Anyone from tambourine shaking happy-clappy born again freaks, through catholics, all the way up to jews, muslims, moonies, scientologists, conspiracy theorists and Gunzenbomz. In fact, anyone who believes in anything they can't see, smell, touch or take a photograph of.

And if anyone here with small children tolerates a belief in Santa, you're just as bad. All you are doing is sewing the seed for belief in "spiritual" shit in later life.

I'll also amend my earlier statement slightly:

If a belief in some form of afterlife is of great comfort to you, then I have no issues with that.

However...

If you choose to tell me about it, I would like the following statement to be entered into the record:

That quiet voice you can hear, right at the back of your mind? The one that's telling you to shut the fuck up?

That's the one you need to be listening to right about now.

Inevitably, Christianity always finds some way to spin things. They're masters of the art and have been doing that for thousands of years. Me? I believe in the old Norse gods. Far more believable than the guff they put in the Bible.

Why choose to believe in ANYTHING invisible? Don't want to be left out? And anyway, what makes them any more believable than anything else?

"standing in front of you are an invisible geezer in sandals and an invisible geezer wearing a helmet with horns"

"I'll believe in the bloke with the horns please, the bloke with the sandals doesn't sound very believable to me"

Based on proven scientific observation.

Although, the word "theory" which is bandied about by Physicists seems to be a bit of a gift for nut jobs to cling on to.
