This. The nearest one is currently miles and miles from me, which is clearly pointless. I know you can charge overnight from house, but still.

I've done the math and I could have one and still be able to get to work and back. I would have to charge overnight at home as there are few chargers up north outside major cities. So it would completely rob me of the convince of a traditional car. I would have to micromanage and pre-plan every journey.

Simple test:

Do you ever wake up in the morning to find your mobile is on 5% because you forgot to plug it in last night?

Don't buy a Tesla.

Don't blame me when you're going to work on a bus that smells like old piss because your toy car didn't have enough juice to wipe the windscreen.

ps. I really want a fucking Tesla. Induction charger built under the drive perhaps?

get in line - from what I've seen of the Model 3 though I'm not sold on it - I "like" buttons, nobbly things for certain functions. Having everything (and like really, everything) run out of that single screen sounds like a receipe for fail.

What happens if some stupid fuckwad totals the screen on you - dunno - maybe if I had one i'd feel different but it strikes me as a single point of failure.

Solar panels on roof of the house - charge battery on the side of the house - plug car into battery... (believe they are already working on this so...)

I'm pretty certain there was a Model 3 parked-up at the new Tesla place on the main road into Leeds. Didn't have time to U-turn to take a peek, but certanly didn't look as large as a Model S... must investigate further.

Be surprised tbh - latest I heard was peeps didn't expect the first models to be even remotely near the uk until December at the earliest. Could be wrong.

I had to talk to a guy in a Model X the other day. It's about as subtle as a hummer and hideously ugly from the back, but the rear gull wing doors were pretty cool to watch.

aye.

From the latest stuff going on with electric cars it might not be long though before Tesla get's upped on this arena as some other players are on the scene.

In the mean time I shall have to make do with my hybrid bundle of joy that I collect in the next few days

Dunno other car makers look miles behind at the moment, especially with vertically integrating battery production. Whether Tesla can meet mainstream demand is the main test now for them

I’m not sure there’s a massive first mover advantage and most of the OEMs will just take a fast follower approach.

I don't know how much of the issue that Tesla are having with the 3 are things that are being encountered by a company that's new or is more at home with software or if these issues are faced by most large manufacturers and it's just we never hear about them. I hope it's the latter but large scale production and the logistics that go with that are difficult things to master.

The vertical integration should see them in a strong position for quite a while. The other companies are going to have to fight amongst themselves for the limited capacity that is out there to service the current EV market nevermind what's coming. And whilst the likes of LG will be able to scale up that will take time. Mercedes at least see this as an area that you need to lock down and they have done their own investment. That said that kind of head start can also be eroded just not as fast.

The one thing that I don't see with any of the other manufacturers out there is their approach to the media centre, controls and info screens. Tesla are doing the mobile phone model where over time you updates automagically appear and bring you new shiny things and fix issues. At the moment (I might be wrong for the odd one here) car manufacturers are by and large sticking with how things have been done for years where you buy a car and barring any major issues the software in the ECU or the like, the software you got when you bought the car is the software that the car will still have on it when it dies. How long that remains a thing they can get away with is anyone's guess but it's not the kind of thing they can all pivot and get into within 6 months.

The supply chain’s relatively established at this point (outside of China).

To give a sense of scale, Tesla’s investment over the last 10 years is about equivalent to 2 years for Toyota. VW, GM, Renault and Nissan might try and lead this, but everyone else is just going to hang out until the mid 2020s and play relatively quick catch up.

i know other manufacturers are going to electric, but you really need to drive and experience the Tesla to see how far ahead they are. Amazing experience.

200k for a car that does 0-60 in under 2 seconds and tops out at over 250mph. Crikey.
