Contractors - pricing and pointers

Dudes (and dudettes),

Just been having a chat with one of the partners and they've tabled the idea of us taking on a grad / junior IT person to assist me with the stuff I've got on (probably 6 months I'd of thought).

Would ideally need experience of Exchange (migration a bonus), virtualisation (though that is optional) and PHP programming (as they would be getting involved in some dev work - nothing massively complex) and a little bit of JQuery as well (but again, not to a massively complex degree).

We are thinking that this might suit a grad or someone just starting out in 2nd line perhaps - would give them a chance to get some experience in other areas as the role is pretty much a "jack of all trades" really.

Any ideas on contract rates we should expect to see for someone with those skills?

Are you sure you can handle the intense workload of asking questions on trickery three times a day?

You need to slow down as well - in danger of hitting the 40k mark

Zippy can easily move nearer being a water gypo, added benefit that you can pay him less as he won't pay tax and he might tarmac your carpark.

If you find a junior/grad with exchange migration experience, PHP skills and virtualisation expertise for 200 quid a day please send them my way afterwards.

fook off i'd be keeping them!

actually the level of expertise doesn't have to be huge nor complete - Hyper V is a piece of they could learn that very quickly (at least from the point of view of how we use it).

So i'm thinking this would probably suit a grad who wanted to get a leg up and had some knowledge in some areas. As long as that knowledge was enough for us the rest they could learn on the fly.

Please don't get a junior to perform your exchange migration. Thank me later.

Also have you licenced o365 yet for that, if so you've paid for MS Planner and Teams already (regarding other thread).

hmm - well 1st off we use public folders very heavily and will continue to do so for the next few years at least I recon. Second the costs do not outweigh the capital, so after one year we'd have spent enough to buy our own fooking exchange server.

The only point I can see to it is not having the capital outlay and issues of managing your own exchange server. But if you are fine with that - whats the point?

Even taking into account all licensing it still seems like throwing money down the drain to me (not to mention it thrashing the f$ing ass out of your internet connection) - which has happened with 2 clients of ours and only came to light once they'd signed up to it.

I dunno - maybe every installation isn't equal but from our camp - it just doesn't make sense

PF's have been depreciated in the roadmap for ten years. Shared mailboxes are free and unlimited in Exchange online. There's just no issue there.

If you're only looking at the outlay of a server, and not considering the repeat migration at the end of each depreciation cycle, the power, the backup, the maintenance overhead, the risk, the limited ability to scale, the lack of third party support, the fixed size of onprem MBX, the single point of failure on remote working etc etc then you're just not approaching that comparison well.

Internet connection? Webmail is superb. Outlook can still cache. Sounds like your clients did something silly with their migration and ended up contending a load of initial activesync all at once. Mail wise it's all still light as a feather.

I've only just embraced o365, and have to say it's pretty good. We used to run all our own shit on our own tin, but it's just a load of grief in the long run, from what i can see.

All sage words - but we don't recycle our gear until it's falling apart and even then some sticky tape gets involved first. I agree that if you cycle your gear every 3 years then yes it probably makes some sense - but we don't.
