We're not far off the next Nvidia chipset (Pascal) though aren't we? With similar speed improvement promises.

Indeed, but it's the price point of the AMDs that could be interesting. $300 for a 980ti equivalent.

Bearing in mind the relatively slow development in gpus price/performance ratio and AMDs behind the curve power/performance ratios in recent releases, I'd be pretty damn upset if neither AMD or Nvidia didn't deliver on all fronts this cycle

Pricing is keen. Have AMD closed the gap forcing nVidia to react? Consumer wins either way.

I'm not so sure. It looks a lot like a repeat of the last gen. 1080 = 980, 1080 Ti to come later, similar pricing. I don't think they think AMD will challenge them. Their reveal will be in a couple of weeks, so it will be interesting to see.

Keen to see what the likes of EVGA can do with Pascal, I suspect it will be tasty indeed....

I think you're underselling the new cards a bit, the non-Ti 1080 looks to have better performance than the Titan X (I know, vague Nvidia benchmarks etc so could be bollocks). I don't remember the 980 being anything like that kind of jump in power. That being said, the best bit of the 1070/80 will probably be a big drop in the price of the 970/980ti. A <£200 970 would be perfect for my needs.

That's not the point I was making. There will certainly be a jump in performance and energy efficiency due to the smaller die sizes, but I'm not convinced that AMD will offer any more meaningful competition and drive the prices down (although it remains to be seen as yet). nVidia have bumped up the prices again by around £50 over the equivalent cards last time around, so I don't think they're expecting AMD to offer much competition.

nVidia are just having a laugh now - if you want you can pay an extra $100 for a "Founders Edition" version of the card - what's special about it, worth the extra $100 - Overclocking? Super cooling? No. Turns out Founder's Edition just means reference card. So, you could well get a custom card with better cooling and save $100 in a couple of months time.

For some people the blower on the reference card might be useful, but yeah, it's pretty clearly gouging all the day 1 buyers.

Extensive review of the 1080. Pretty much what you'd expect, a definite step over the previous generation.

Anyone know when the current top spec cards are likely to go down in price? I'm looking at an upgrade soon as my rig is creaking at the seams and there are some games I'm just actively avoiding till I can upgrade for the better experience now.

The 1080 looks to be better than any of the top spec cards, and at a lower price. It's doubtful the Titan or 980ti will drop enough to make them worthwhile over just getting a 1080.

e: or get a 1070, still on a par with the 980ti etc but much cheaper.

That's much lower than the current Titan X price, and similar to the 980ti.

The 1080 is still the equivalent of the 980 for the new generation, i.e. there will be a 1080Ti in a few months, which will be the top gamer's card, and cost even more, so it's a good price hike over the last generation.

Presumably, the 980Ti and all the rest will drop in price when the new cards are out in any numbers though.

There are some 1070 numbers doing the rounds now, and if real would make it a cracker for the money compared to a 1080.

That's the ones. 5% better than a stock 980ti at a considerably lower price.

There was a load of Polaris info released to the press in Macau today, but it's apparently under nda until the end of June, after the 1070 launch. AMD really have no clue.

A clocked 1080 is faster than an R9 295X2 with way less than half the power requirement. Good luck Polaris.
