I'm probably being dense but why do you need an extra network card? I'd also be tempted by the KFA2 980ti, it's currently a squid under £500.

It used to be a performance issue way back when because the NIC will offload the processing from the CPU, but obviously with the monster I've specced that's hardly a problem. My main concern is driver support. Intel push out decent drivers for their NICs on a regular basis. Motherboard manufacturers generally don't.

I have a very similar build I'm looking at. Done quite a bit of research and I'd recommend:

1) EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB HYBRID Video Card
2) for storage did you mean...Samsung SM951 512GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive
3) Maybe a bigger PSU in case you fancy going SLI in the future?
4) That Noctua is meant to be best of Air coolers, but its huge and I really dont like the colours they are in. Going with H110i GTX as its clean looking and keeps dead cool.

You haven't been tempted by going X99 chipsets?

Hope you don't mind me asking here EG, a couple of lads I know keep telling me to hang on from building a new rig as there is loads of new hardware coming out this year. Is this correct?

Should be a big step in graphics in the summer with them going down to a 16nm process and HBM 2.0. By then we'll have a better idea of what kind of grunt the VR kit will need.

AMD were demoing their Polaris architecture at CES

I've got a Fractal Design Mini and it's quiet just running the stock cooler, maybe give that a try for a while to see if you need more cooling.

1) What's the difference?
2) Well I was originally looking at the Samsung 850 Pro Series 512GB SSD. I'm having trouble tracking down the SSD you mention. Do you have a link.
3) UPS is 1000VA
4) Noted, I'll check it out.

Well yes, there's always that. If we all waited for the 'next big thing' to be released and no one would ever buy any PC components. First gen stuff is always wonky anyway, best buying on the back of a generation of cards when everything is solid and proven.

1) It is a liquid cooled graphics card which you can overclock nicely. Just stick it on back of case as exhaust.

2) I might be wrong but you are looking at these? ~500 read write.

http://www.ebuyer.com/657564-samsung...9619&pkw=&pmt=

Whereas these are even better....

http://www.ebuyer.com/725818-samsung...sd-mz-v5p512bw

~2500/1500 read write

3) Maybe I dont know much about PSU's, but on part picker, press the make GPU SLI, and youll be over your 650W.

I have an i7 4790, GTX980ti and ASUS Hero VII mobo, and on the firestrike benchmark puts me in the top 3% of tested systems, that lot will be better

The new Nvidia Pascal series chipset is out sometime this year. Major reduction in card sizes due to new architecture, greater capability for less-possibly a lot less-power. Should be really nice cards for the new DirectX 12 games.

Nowt wrong with their current cards though...

If you're spending that much, do what I did and go for a 6 core and a liquid cooler, and clock the tits off of it. 4.4 ghz is not stretching it, and more games are taking advantage of multicore systems.

so you mean like the 5820K X99 Chipset. Ive been tempted, but faster cores of 6700K would be better currently, and what games will use 6 cores really.

I have a 6600K currently running at 4.4ghz under liquid cooling. Cant hear my fans (until the GPU starts up!). Not sure for gaming an i7 is needed, could save you £90.

I'd consider upping the wattage of the PSU. Using your existing 980ti with a new one in an SLI config will eat some juice, better to overspec the PSU and have it ticking along than have it close to the limit all the time. (or over the limit)

Also is there any advantage to having a M.2 connected SSD as compared to a standard SATA interface? With a standard sata drive you can connect it up to an adaptor for recovery purposes, re-use the drive in a different machine without an M.2 connector or stick it in a USB caddy. With an M.2 drive your choices are limited. Personally if space in the case isn't a requirement and there is no significant performance or price difference I would go with a normal sata SSD.

SATA 3 is 6gb/sec. M2 is 10gb/sec. You can get converters for recovery. But honestly, on my gaming rig nothing is critical.

Seems good but there's not much info on the memory, you might want to check if it's dual/quad channel, try to match your number of sticks to the memory, i.e. 2 sticks for dual channel, 4 sticks for quad channel

EDIT: Just checked that part number and it seems to be dual channel according to Scan and it's a 2 stick kit so it should be fine.

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/32gb-...-15-17-17-35-x

Scan prices are better as you can see too, might want to price the whole list on their site too.

The M.2 drive is a good pick, I've got the Samsung SM951 and goes like shit off a shovel, check the mobo and see if it supports NVMe M.2 ports, not all of them do, if it's newer it probably does but I would check.

650w is VERY light for a PSU also, I would go with 750-850w to cover you for upgrades and new components.

Really surprised Scan isn't in that comparison list too, it's a very large PC supply company in the UK

in regards to part picker, its very very good to help with compatability, and gives a jist on price, but doing a google search for prices will certainly give you a little bit cheaper.

Let me know when you take the plunge in the end EG, i have to ask you something.

and btw, the reason i asked whether you thought about the 5820K 6 cores, is because they use DDR4, but more importantly faster PCIE lanes for SLI.

One wee point I forgot to make, re; CPUs; at present, Intel are having production issues with the Skylake-series i7s. To the point that prices are a bit higher at present. That being the case, there's a real choice between an i7 6700K Skylake, and an older Haswell-E 5820K;

https://www.scan.co.uk/products/inte...700k-s1151-oem

https://www.scan.co.uk/products/inte...-lane-140w-plu

The latter is a retail box, so the OEM price will be about the same as the 6700K.

Four newer, more future-proof cores, versus six of the older Haswell Enthusiast variety, and with the latter, you get a few more bells & whistles as part of the mobo.

You pays your money....
