I suspect the taxman will want a word when I cash out if these prices hold. Never thought I'd be happy to say that.

What's a reasonable percentage of one's net worth to hold in something ultra-risky like cryptocurrencies?

I'm not risk-averse and it's currently sitting at about 10% of my net worth.

Completely depends on personal circumstances, but 10% feels like a big number. Put differently, if someone handed you the equivalent in cash today, would you go and buy crypto with it?

Statement by the US SEC.

https://www.sec.gov/news/public-stat...ton-2017-12-11

For the TL;DR

Quote:
We at the SEC are committed to promoting capital formation. The technology on which cryptocurrencies and ICOs are based may prove to be disruptive, transformative and efficiency enhancing. I am confident that developments in fintech will help facilitate capital formation and provide promising investment opportunities for institutional and Main Street investors alike.

Even with the price drop of ~40%, it's still more than 1000% ROI if you've held all year.

I have to admit, I'm losing faith in Bitcoin though. These network fees are ridiculous, and I can't see any relief in the near future. The mempool is full, and Lightning will be available around the time Half Life 3 is released at this rate.

The volatility is a massive reason, but ultimately the system grinds to a halt under anything other than trivially low volumes.

Oh that's solvable and underway. There's no fully predicting insanity like this any more than you could go back in time five years and drop 2017 black Friday onto Visa.

I think Bitcoin is pretty terrible as anything other than something analogous to gold. It can't reasonably be used as currency (there are other newer coins doing this much better).

I've gotten rid of half the coins I had and am now left with Eth, Litecoin, OmiseGo, Monero and a little bit of Siacoin.

Bought a few Eth when the price dropped to ~£350 yesterday morning and it's now back to to £550
