No rights to my photos after copying

Well I'm stumped, copied a load of photos from my memory card to my Win7 laptop last night but I don't appear to have any access rights to rotate or edit etc.
I've faffed about in security settings, my user account is administrator and I've even tried adding the user account seperately with full control.
I still don't have permissions though...
Has my Canon 1100D stamped some kind uber rights onto these photos somehow?

Any help greatly appreciated

What location did you copy them to? Some folders, such as inetpub, are protected by default.

Try taking ownership of the top-level folder you copied them to.
Right-click on Folder - Properties - Security tab.
Click Advanced button, Owner tab. Click Edit, select your account in "Change owner to" box. Tick "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" option. Click Apply.

It's Win7 Home Premium.
Copied to "My Pictures"
I have ensured I am owner of said folder and all sub folders.
Interestingly I've since copied the photos onwards to a home media backup device thing and I seem to have the rights there to do stuff.
I was going to make sure my user account was in the administration group in mmc but it appears you can't do that in Home Premium

What error message did you get?

It's not something obvious as them being set read-only?

Ok just tried to rotate a picture, get the following error.

"You cannot rotate this image. The file might be in use or open in another program, or the file or folder might be read-only"

None of the suggestions in the error message are true.

Question: Have you at any point put the card into a machine running Vista? I've got an External HDD that refuses to work with any machine other than my laptop (which runs Vista... I know... shut up. No. Really. Shut up.)

Ok I seem to have gained some control.
Although I granted myself full control of the "My pictures" folder and supposedly all its sub directories I couldn't edit this picture until I granted full control to myself over the folder the actual picture was in.

Despite what looks like the default homeusers and administrator accounts already having full control.

So why is my account (the only account on this laptop) not included in those groups and why should i need to add myself to every folder?
And one of the folders seems to be marked read only but every time i uncheck and apply, I go back 10 seconds later and it's read only again!

Did you take them under creative commons licensing? Vista is know to have a problem with that.

jpeg or raw? Also (in the vein of open it in notepad), have you rebooted / logged in again? If something is trying to index/catalog the files they'll remain locked

They were jpegs and I did turn it off and on again
Never had this problem before but usually I transfer from the camera over USB.
On this occasion I physically took the SD card out and put in in card slot on laptop. I'm sure I've done this before with no problems but that wouldn't have been the problem...... Would it??

I've never had a problem importing from camera or card direct into computer. Any files copied across from drive to drive usually inherit the security permissions of the folder they get copied to.

On a more serious note - you know USBs have two modes? A 'quick removal' mode and a 'fast write' mode. If it's in fast write, you have to manually eject it, whereas the former you just yank it. Wonder if you have it in fast write and didn't eject it properly once, and it got itself in a tizzy.

sure after discovering that in win 7 i tried both modes to check if it'd be as much of a risk as 2000? was so i'd know before doing critical copies and it didn't actually screw me over.
