More homeplugs died

My 4th set of homeplugs have fucking died (Devolo this time). Fuck this shit, I've ordered a Netgear 5ghz wifi adapter for my PC.

Fucking bastard things.

Got a pair from TP-Link that are going strong... so far. Did you have any of those die on you?

My Devolos died some time ago, working off a USB wifi dongle now. It's not brilliant but works most of the time.

Just stick a couple of wireless repeaters up around the house?

On my current connection, it would be quicker to fly the data a bit at a time via vacuum tubes. In fact I'm not entirely convinced that's not how TalkTalk does it (Not my choice, my current living situation leaves MUCH to be desired)

Just bin the lot and buy some Ubiquiti wifi devices.

But also: have you thought that it may be your house electrics killing them? Mine Devolo 650+ are still working 5 years later. First set.

In my old house I used to get problems with homeplugs dying and bulbs going by the ton. I had a voltage check done and the supply into the house was 246v which the electrician said could explain the bulbs going (the house had been rewired a couple of years before we bought it so the internal stuff wasn't the problem).

I recommended the Amplifi HD kit to my brother - who got it just the other day and couldn't be happier. It had been on my list of purchases, but currently my Airport Extreme is doing its job (as an upgrade to the awful Sky Q hub firing out WiFi which was appalling).

I’ve edited my post as I meant to refer to Ubiquiti’s Amplifi HD kit (with two plug-in Wi-fi extenders).
It’s the dog’s nads.

Tell me about it... we get thoroughly shafted with the price. My brother picked it up for approx. 280 (though he's in Denmark, so that's an approx conversion rate).

I take it you cba to run some cat5/6 to your router then?

To thread hijack slightly has anyone flashed an old Meraki with OpenWRT? I'm after something that can offer multiple SSIDs but importantly give me time restrictions on at least one of the SSIDs to cut the kids off at predefined times.

I think a Ubiquiti UAP can do this but I can get an old Meraki for about half the price.

Ubiquiti isn't really home gear, it's low end business hardware, which is why it's more.

And to hijack the thread even further... I set up pi-hole (https://pi-hole.net) on a vm running DietPi. Blocks ads like a charm! All devices in the household using it for DNS and DHCP (had to have it running DHCP as the Sky Q Hub doesn’t allow you to add/alter DNS servers).
A nice evening project instigated by this post which I pretty much followed (other than installing it on an actual rPi):

Only just got my watchguard tuned. I like the idea of pihole, but need to summon the mental energy to set it up once the kids are in bed, but also for the inevitable troubleshooting when some website the Mrs wants to visit doesn't work properly. It is on the list, especially since i switched my dns over to cloudflare the other month.
