Digital Camera thread #191

Done to death, and read countless reviews on every site I can find, I still canít decide which camera to go for. I've had a Fuji Finepix 1300 (yep thatís a 1.3 mp) for years now from back when digicams were expensive and film camera was still pretty much the king.

Today my new phone arrived in the form of a Sony Ericsson s700i, which comes with a 1.3mp camera built in and I canít have my phone being a better camera than my camera is can I. Thatís just depressing

So the thread is back. Iím after one which
  • Has a 3x or better optical zoom
  • Is compact
  • Has a rechargeable battery/charger
  • Is better than 4 mp
  • Uses SD, MultiMedia Card, Memory stick or Smart media (to interface easily with my laptop's card reader)
  • Looks good too! >> Although this is my last priority.

I know the last Digicam thread on here had a number of people interested in investing in new cameras themselves too (Nor Munk and DM's gf). I know thereís some camera kings on here too in the form of Dizmatt, blurr etc so I'm calling you guys too!

Did anyone from the last thread go and buy a new cam? If so - which and why and is it actually any good?

Camera that I've got my eye on is this one
What you guys think?

Thanks in advance.

My local Asda, and I imagine country wide, are selling the Fuji A340 I think it is (could be the A345)for £95, http://www.fujifilm.co.uk/digital/cameras/a340/ fills all your criteria,(just about in the mp stakes 4.1mp) looks decent, good lens, and decent price.

I got this one for £99.99 (gone up to £109.99);

http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/prod...ducts_id=99937

Casio EXILIM EX-Z30 - http://www.exilim.co.uk/exilimzoom/e...pecifications/

It fulfills all of your criteria, except it is 3.2MP, but unless you are doing professional photography you dont need more than 3MP tbh....retails at around £200.

3.2MP
3x Optical (Pentax lens) (4x digital)
2" Colour TFT LCD
USB cradle with adaptor
Rechargable Superlife Lithion-Ion
JPEG, AVI, WAV

another reccomendation
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...739705-2715814

5.2mp and a 3x zoom jobby. The digital zoom is pretty funky on this one as well, zooms in like blade runner . Mates got this camera and ive played about with it a lot over the last few months, takes fantastic photos and its genuinely pocket sized and fairly sturdy.
Only downers that come to mind is it doesn't have a big screen (only 1.5", im quite a fan of having a nice big screen on my kodak) and it is slightly slower then my camera at actually physically taking photos. As in, you can't whip it out, turn it on and take a photo all within 5 seconds

Hope that ees som 'elp!

In reference to the Canon one it looks pretty swanky, I honestly couldn't tell the difference in picture quality above 3mp. I would say if your willing to spend 250 squid, say nuts to getting a 7.1mp camera and get one with a bigger optical zoom.

Full review of the IXUS. In my view, for a compact, you really can't go wrong with the IXUS. The 300, 400 and 500 were all superb. I've not seen the 700 yet but it's bound to be top quality.

I recently got an ixus 500, superb little thing. The build quality is amazing and the amount of settings/tools at your disposal is quite suprising.

Funkeh, that's the exact model I was thinking of getting, any chance you could bung up a couple of piccies?

I'd be especially interested in seeing how it handles low light / non flash conditions if you've got any lying about?

I was seriously looking at this one myself too. Any nifty features you've discovered Fulmineus? Pros/Cons?

Fuji tend to have a reputation for making rubbish. I've no experience myself, but from spending some time reading the dpreview forums, they get alot of abuse.

thats why you should look at optical zoom

personally I'd go for the canon powershot s70 (not just because I have one) but its a better alternative to that ixus 700 - both being 7mp cameras.

My policy with cameras was always "get one from a "proper" camera maker, not someone who has branched out into cameras as a sideline. 2 notable exceptions to this rule would be Sony and Panasonic, but BenQ? No thanks.

APS camera's were Kodaks way of trying to make more money before they moved over to digital. However the APS system was flawed. APS films were not too cheap and they processing costs were expencive. Last but not least they took much much longer to print. With the different picture formats either the older machines needed to readjust the lenses or with the new digital printing machines the paper heads need to change around. Scanning the negatives when processed took a much much longer time and the pictures are not all that good qualilty, some look very very grainy and dotty.

Useless information for you

personally I'd go for the canon powershot s70 (not just because I have one) but its a better alternative to that ixus 700 - both being 7mp cameras.
This one?

Shame its a Compact Flash memory, or that wouldve been a contender

In reference to the Canon one it looks pretty swanky, I honestly couldn't tell the difference in picture quality above 3mp. I would say if your willing to spend 250 squid, say nuts to getting a 7.1mp camera and get one with a bigger optical zoom.
I was looking for one actually, but they seem to rarely go beyond x3 optical for under £500 under a decent brand. Shame really, because a good zoom would be a lot more useful. If you know any, post em'!
