And Caramon's constantly "choking" with emotion in Drangonlance! It's a wonder he can actually breathe!

Robert Jordans fascination with women folding their arms under their breasts comes to mind also.

Just finished A Dance with Dragons. Yet more grease and blood and wine and whatever the fuck dribbling down people's chins.

Gripping book, kept me reading because I wanted the story to unfold, but I'm annoyed by some of the events tbh! As usual he's left a lot of plot elements on a cliff-hanger so I'll be awaiting his next installment of messing eating antics eagerly...

Just read Centurion by Simon Scarrow in a week while babba was in hospital, very good, though I do like that series a lot, now onto Operation Mincemeat as a fact based change before tackling the brick that is A Dance with Dragons!

Simon Scarrow was a lecturer of mine during my college days, many moons ago. I'll never forget my first class with him, he spent the first 30 minutes plugging his book, then proceeded to give us a pop quiz and the prize was a signed copy of his book.

At the time a lot of people, i.e. other students made a lot of snide comments about him and his books, saying they were a blatant rip off of Gladiator.

He's doing a series set during the Napoleonic Wars now isn't he?

Extreme Rambling: Walking Israel's Barrier. For Fun. by Mark Thomas.

M.T. shouldn't need any introduction for anyone over 35 who's had access to a TV. Hilarious comedian come political activist, MT has written books attacking the Arms Industry and Coco Cola. This time he sets off to walk the entire length of the separation barrier, meeting people from both sides, touring the local sites and bullying some soldiers.

yeh Blurr, I've read the first one, and have the others, they are on my "to read" list which grows longer as my little girl grows up.

Even if they are a blatant rip off they are still good page turners.

the second book is probably my least favourite.

there are that many fucking awesome characters / races its ridiculous.

reading back through the stories theres already stuff in the first one (just finished) that i had forgotten that becomes important to the story later on.

i couldnt finish the game of thrones books meself, made it to book 3 i think and got bored and read something else. to put that in perspective i even managed to finish the da vinci code, now THAT is a poorly written book!

oh and another suggestion, if you can find them the berserker books by fred saubehagen(sp?) though last time i looked they were difficult to get hold off. think they were out of print.

very similar to the whole evil merciless race pursuing humanity vibe of the alastair reynolds stuff

Deadhouse Gates rocked! If it wasn't for the sheer awesomeness in Memories of Ice of the 400-odd page siege of Capustan by an army of people who want to eat the defenders, it would be the best book in the series by a mile. Sure, Felsin was an annoying bint, but the chain of dogs stuff was incredible! And how can you not love a book where Fiddler blows up a giant D'ivers centipede-thingy with a crossbow (admittedly he usually blows up something cool with a crossbow, but this was the first!)?

Really good series, but I was very disappointed by The Crippled God tbh. A good enough book on it's own, but as a conclusion to the series I just didn't buy it.

i was like that, a lot of stuff seemed to have a rushed conclusion, however then i read that the actual end to the series is being written by ian c esslemont, so technically the story hasnt finished.

the two of his i have read so far have been good, return of the crimson guard was excellent i thought, although very similiar writing style to erikson

Very vague, non-specific spoiler:

  Spoiler: highlight to read
It's not the unfinished arcs that I didn't like, I'm happy for those story lines to be continued in that way. It's the conclusion to the crippled god stuff that dissatisfied, specifically the explanation of Shadowthrone and Cottillion's Master Plan. As awesome as the series was, it's biggest strength - it's sheer scope - was always it's biggest weakness. The books were so riddled with continuity errors and contradictory information that you always had to go into each book with a certain air of fuzziness regarding the details or you'd go mad trying to make sense of it sometimes. All the way through the books you had these two master schemers lurking in the shadows pulling strings, with never really much of an explanation of their ultimate goal. Fair enough. But when it came time to spell out just what they'd done and why, Erikson was unable to do so in a convincing manner. There was no sense whatsoever that the two of them had foreseen how each event would transpire and nudged the players along accordingly, leaving the reader (or me, at least) with the feeling that Erikson had never really known quite where his story was going.

As for ICE - Return of the Crimson Guard was brilliant, my third favourite Malazaan book. Yet I've never been able to finish Night of Knives after 3 or 4 attempts, and after ROTCG I was a little bit disappointed in the follow up Stonewielder.

It's probably the weakest of the series so far , because of the way he wrote it , with half the characters being split off and the resulting 6 year wait to find out what happens next!

I quite the back story and the little bit's and pieces you learn of the wider world.

( I will confess that sometimes I wish he'd just get it done! )

The Balzano & Byrne series by Richard Montanari. Currently on 3 out of 5. I forgot how good a writer he was.

The malazan books are both equally fantastic and an utter chore in equal measure. so much so that ive overtly avoided the last one so far.

Reading the kells legend series at the moment, its got lashings of visceral violence and rape. everything a young boy needs in fact

Just finished A Dance With Dragons. Much better than Crows, and helped immensely by being able to touch on all the characters again. However I do not thank him for having to wait until the next book is done to find out what happens next!

Bastard!

I was reading the first third to a half getting worried by how the story was going, certain characters didn't seem to be acting like they had been, but then .. things happen and I raced through the last 500 pages.

So many open ended things. Again , Bastard!

Just starting Dust of Dreams, penultimate malazan book, but getting to that stage I would just like to be finished now.

As much as this series has alot of characters i really enjoy I find that far too much has been added thats just superfluous - I accept they may become more imporant later or in ICE's books but some of the deviations and very minor story arcs just get on my tits. As does the constant "hey this character i killed 3 books ago, guess what??? They're back and pissed"

This really good series could have been fucking fantastic if it had been edited down to 6ish books or so.

After that its both of these
Sanctus - Simon Toyne
American Gods - Neil Gaiman
