Spatterjay books are good. Really liked the change whilst being in the same universe. Once you have read them go back and read prador moon if you haven't.

Heh

I've been snowed under at work so the last thing I've been doing is reading lol.

I have started Seeds of Earth by Michael Cobley, humanity in space surrounded by lots of different species kinda thing. Not bad so far , it's either gonna end up decent or possibly Kevin J Andersons stuff. Which is fine , but a wee bit soapy.

Also have M John Harrisons Nova Swing and Sam Sykes - Tome of the Undergate queued up once I get past crimbo..

I've been reading graphic novels more than anything else the past month , just because I was in that kind of mood....

Ender's Game is cracking Brocken, the follow ups are quite different but good as well. And there's the shadow trilogy , which follows a different character more or less starting at the same time as Ender in Ender's Game.

Just finished Riding Rockets by Mike Mullane:

Quote:
Selected as a Mission Specialist in 1978 in the first group of shuttle astronauts, Mike Mullane completed three missions and logged 356 hours aboard the Discovery and Atlantis shuttles. It was a dream come true. As a boy, Mullane could only read about space travel in science fiction, but the launch of Sputnik changed all that. Space flight became a possible dream and Mike Mullane set out to make it come true. In this absorbing memoir, Mullane gives the first-ever look into the often hilarious, sometime volatile dynamics of space shuttle astronauts - a class that included Vietnam War veterans, feminists, and propeller-headed scientists. With unprecedented candour, Mullane describes the chilling fear and unparalleled joy of space flight. As his career centred around the Challenger disaster, Mullane also recounts the heartache of burying his friends and colleagues. And he pulls no punches as he reveals the ins and outs of NASA, frank in his criticisms of the agency. A blast from start to finish, Riding Rockets is a straight-from-the-gut account of what it means to be an astronaut, just in time for this latest generation of stargazers.
Very good indeed, especially if you're into anything NASA related as I am.

30% of the way through Carrying the Fire: An Astronaut's Journeys by Michael Collins (the CM pilot on Apollo 11)

Quote:
The years that have passed since Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins piloted the Apollo 11 spacecraft to the moon in July 1969 have done nothing to alter the fundamental wonder of the event: man reaching the moon remains one of the great events - technical and spiritual - of our lifetime. In this remarkable book, Michael Collins conveys, a very personal way, the drama, beauty, and humour of that adventure. He also traces his development from his first flight experiences in the air force, through his days as a test pilot, to his Apollo 11 space walk, presenting an evocative picture of the joys of flight as well as a new perspective on time, light, and movement from someone who has seen the fragile Earth from the other side of the moon.
Better than brilliant.

If you're into space travel, NASA, flight etc I can't recommend these enough, especially Carrying the Fire.

Just finished 2001 : A Space Odyssey - despite watching the film about 10 times I'd never read the book!

Slotted in another Percy Jackson as the bairn wants me to catch up and next I'm gonna grind my way through Stephen Hawkings a brief history of time, before my brain turns to mush

The beauty and the sorrow (Peter Englund), the first world war told through the diaries of some of those involved. Only a 100 pages in, but an interesting read so far.

Back on the wagon!

Finished Singularity Sky & Iron Sunrise by Charlie Stross.

Enjoyed them both , quite liked the premise and the characters, good sci-fi setting. he does lose his way a little bit in the first one, some things don't really seem to have a point or go anywhere , but good Sci-Fi reads!

Next up Echo City by Tim Lebbon

Keep meaning to check these out! Keep going MZ , nearly there!

I passed on Echo City by virtue of being instantly distracted by Heavens Shadow by David Goyer and Michael Cassutt. It reminds me of the books I read when I was young, stuff like Greg Bear and Larry Niven. A proper spacey / exploration sci-fi yarn. About half way through liking it so far! yes it's got one or two wee bits so far that made me go .. what really? But we'll see how it ends up
