Gorgeous. Hoping the slow moving rockets are indicative of a return to the running about, dodging and shooting gameplay of DooM/2 rather than the borefest I found 3 to be.

Yeah it remains a shame that D3 gameplay didn't match the visual wonders they achieved with their engine.

Doom 3 was severely limited by it's engine wasn't it? They had to keep everything dark, indoors and not too full of monsters to keep frame-rates up whilst maintaining the nice visuals.

I just remember everything being shiny. Even non-shiny things: shiny.

No it was limited by the avg hardware in use. In general carmack style the engine was a beast but entirely ott for purpose. They couldn't unleash it and as you say had limited ability to pack mobs in. Not sure about the light issues though, never heard that. The lighting was incredibly complex at the time hence the shiny show off materials everywhere.

I remember my PC at that point creaking to run it in low settings and the mechanic where you could carry a torch or a gun , but not both at the same time >_<

Doom 3 was released right at the transition from 256MB to 512MB graphics cards, and now we're transitioning from 2GB to 4GB. History repeats.

Yeah I remember the 512MB being recommended for the ultra settings, and at that time they had only just been released (and were extortionately priced). 512MB - 4GB doesn't seem like that big of a jump in 11 years, at least from my non-techie perspective.

I'm assuming they'll fit a chainsaw in there, so we can fit it up some monster's arse..

Doom without a chainsaw would be like The Grateful Dead without LSD.

The games Rage and those following it use the gfx enginge id Tech 5. This new Doom game uses the id Tech 6 engine, hopefully they have fixed texture popping from the sides of the screen on this new engine.

Hopefully there's actually a game attached to the engine.

Am I the only one thinking that this looks less Doom, more Quake IV?

I appreciate that the latter evolved out of the former, but still....

Looks shite tbh. Dont believe those graphics, its almost CERTAINLY a pre-rendered vertical slice, not actual gameplay despite their claims. The movement very much reminded me of the Aliens: Colonial Marines "gameplay" trailer that Gearbox demoed.

Besides, gunplay looks shit and if you want to use the chainsaw, you have to go through a fucking execution animation each and every time you kill something. Doom 3 was disappointing, but this just looks like shit.

Nahh, I don't think it's pre-rendered. There's nothing in there that's particularly crazy that I can see, bearing in mind the state of play in terms of hardware. id's engines have always been over-achievers in that respect.

Personally I am absolutely fine with grimy demonic Quake from a DM pov. Very interested to see if the singleplayer changes the tone a bit. COOP plx.
