Paranautical Activity pulled from Steam mere hours after exiting Early Access

Paranautical Activity has been removed from Steam, just a few hours after being fully released following a lengthy period of time in Early Access. The reason seems to be that the developer tweeted death threats to Gabe Newell over the game was listed in the new releases section as being "Now available in Early Access!", which the developer felt would harm sales. The developer, Mike Maulbeck, has now said that he is done with the gaming industry.

Valves Doug Lombardi said, in a statement to Polygon

"Yes, we have removed the game's sales page and ceased relations with the developer after he threatened to kill one of our employees"

Users who have already purchased the game will still be able to download and play it.

Excellent! That'll be material for everyone who accuses "violent" video games of having an adverse effect on people.

Everyone and his dog seems to be dumping all sorts of suspect garbage on greenlight (and early access if you pay) with very little oversight from Valve. I guess it was only a matter of time before someone acted this way, a lot of games developers are egotistical dicks. Going the next step and throwing your toys out of the pram and threatening people when you don't get what you want seems a rather cliche narrative. Good riddance, if the developer hadn't of stupidly raged at Valve, the players would of probably got worse further down the line when they did something 'wrong' in his eyes.

unprofessional? yes
banned from steam for unprofessional behavior? yeah i'd say so
a credible death threat? no

saying "I'm gonna fucking kill Gabe if he doesn't sort his shit" on twitter of all places. does not warrant that article claiming death threats issued to Gabe Newell. claiming a Developer acts like a prick on social media and gets banned from steam seems much more accurate.

It really is quite depressing now that with social media all context and common sense seems to be completely disregarded and taken totally straight faced.

on a side note:

YouPorn website sponsors eSports team..... Fucking Immense

its not depressing at all, Gabe's entitled to do whatever he likes and if someone acts like a prick to him I've very little sympathy. The culture around gaming is so corrosive and negative, a punch in the face from Gabe is a step in the right direction.

Well, Valve didn't say it was a credible death threat. They didn't say they were reporting it to the police. Asked to comment on by Polygon, they reported the facts. The source of the news is credited as Mike Maulbeck, not Valve.

Yesterday was I reading up about Weev, Katy Sierra, GamerGate etc, and I was suprised at how online threats and action can lead to real world hate-mail, harrassment etc.

I was reading an Economist blog post about Amazon and it's dominance of online book sales. The comparisons are interesting While steam may have large power in the Online-only distribution market, It still isn't dominant overall. And as with Amazon, Steam was perfectly happy to stock Paranautical Activity and sell it on behalf of the developer. Placement on the front page, adverts in the "New Releases" list etc constitute valuable advertising that isn't part of the selling contract nor should it be expected for free. It's great that Valve do market smaller titles on the front page, but I don't think small developers should expect this.

FWIW, Paranautical Activity is NOT shit. Its actually a very enjoyable game, but it lacks the multiplayer features promised at the start of the Early Access campaign.

Fair enough, I have not looked at this game per say. However the general impression I get is that the signal to noise ratio on greenlight and early access is terrible. This is an entirely separate issue though and deserves it's own thread.

The developer is still an egotistical dick though imho.
