Valve to demo new VR "Hardware System" at GDC

http://store.steampowered.com/universe/

Valve have announced that they will be demonstrating the final design of the Steam controller, new Steam Machines and a previously unannounced "VR Hardware System". Valve have already built VR support into Steam, but thisthought to be just for the Oculus Rift. It is no secret that Valve have been working on VR headsets in the past, but they always maintained that these were for internal development only and not for customer release. Time will only tell what Valve have in store for us, but could this be the answer for people put off by Facebooks ownership of Oculus?

I'd be more impressed if they announced a standardised API for VR in partnership with Oculus, Sony and whoever else is knocking a headset together. The last thing we want is a VHS/Betamax or DirectX/OpenGL contest going on.

Stop posting this crap.

Until Valve say it exists, it doesn't and anything else is just retarded interpretation - 3 at 3, times 3 and 14 but if you take that 4 and subtract the 1 it makes 3! - ffs get over yourselves!

The HTC headset appears to be the hardware part of what valve will announce. Their presentation will probably focus on Steam integration and games.

Slightly disappointed at the resolution. The biggest issue I have with the DK2 is the low resolution. The HTC is only just bigger, but the GearVR Note edition offers substantially higher resolution, which is what I was hoping for. The head tracking an low persistence works remarkably well.

However the DK2 works very well with Assetto Corsa, so I'll buy the HTC option anyway as the DK2 I'm using is my mates. Hopefully official valve support will make get it into games where it works well fairly quickly.

There's a new GearVR coming out that uses the new S6.

They say that the HTC has 1200×1080 per eye. So same vertical by more horizontal than DK2. If the refresh rate is high enough, surely that will be enough given that this was the target for crystal cove iirc?

More on SteamVR and technologies, some Steam machines and the Source 2 engine announced.

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/gaming/n...e-windows.html

They've said with Source user created content is becoming ever more important - maybe they want people to make HL3 for them.

Quite interested in the VR and Controller. Price/spec dependant on Steamboxes, speedy enough for most games without streaming from the beefy box but also quiet and having the ability to run Kodi/XBMC or Plex are my main points of interest. Steamlink, I can see the point and purpose but it doesn't appeal to me personally at the moment.

Steam link looks interesting. I've already got a PC for doing the same thing, but at least it adds something unique over all the other streaming plug-in cards.

Looking at the Steam Machines, I may be wrong, but they seem expensive, may as well build a small PC and put SteamOS on it?

Yeah, on the face of it they seem a bit more expensive than building your own. The cost is mist likely down to the different and smaller form factors than the actual components.

Upside of this is that they could spur a resurgence in small form factor cases hopefully doing clever things towards the silent and quiet end of the spectrum.
