Thread for n00b questions with simple answers

I'll start the ball rolling:

If I'm getting a Q6600 quad-core beastie what OS would be the best bet?

Microsoft Vista Basic
Microsoft Vista Basic 64 bit
Microsoft Vista Home Premium
Microsoft Vista Home Premium 64 bit
Microsoft Vista Business
Microsoft Vista Business 64 bit
Microsoft Vista Ultimate
Microsoft Vista Ultimate 64 bit

I guess the question really is 64 bit or not?

Vista Ultimate 64. If you're getting that rig there's no point NOT putting Vista on it, someone as rich as you would be daft not getting the Ultimate version. And, as it's a 64 bit cpu, get the 64 bit version.

Easy.

The best operating system would still have to be the 64 bit version of 2003 server though.

Make sure you don't buy an OEM version as you'll be needing a box to put it back into.

OK, well a bit of back story to flesh out the otherwise thin plot is always a good thing.

New card + new OS = no chance of decent drivers...or does it?

Just check the manufacturers site for the drivers themselves for various os's - and google up some forums for opinion. Probably ok at this stage tbh. They've had plenty of time.

Guru3d.com for your drivers. All these cards are reference cards anyway.

Right, the plan (pending a cashflow reality check) is to get everything except the new HDD and OS and just pop the existing XP HDD in there...then Vista MEGASUPERSPLENDID 64 bit will follow a month later...cash and drivers permitting.

Planned spec (prices inc VAT from OCUK):

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - OEM 159.79
BFG GeForce 8800 GT OC 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail 187.99
Shuttle XPC SG33G5M Deluxe Aluminium Barebones System - Intel Core 2 Duo (LGA775) 294.91
OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Vista Gold Series DDR2 93.99

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 750GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - Retail 116.31
Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit Edition DVD - OEM - 1Pk 119.84

Total (inc P&P) : 984.52

Seems a bit steep but the Shuttle chassis is currently the best available...I gotta have it.

I'm on Vista Ultimate with my Dell lappy M1710 and I fucking hate it. I've given it 3 months now but I just can't get on with it, too buggy, unreliable and just well generally shit.

Going back to XP for 6 - 9 months sometime this weekend

Vista Premium / Ultimate 64 is my vote. I think with Vista Ultimate you can switch between 32 and 64bit installs (edit: possibly that's meant to be you can only order the 64bit disc if you own 32bit). Also on the subject of drivers, unless you have any really aging hardware, or hardware from a manufacture that couldn't give a rats arse, then you'll be fine. For a manufacture to get a WHQL cert, their driver has to run on both the 32bit and 64bit versions.

Edit 2:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvist...a/default.mspx

or something.

Another vote for XP. Much less hassle, particularly if you want to use any old hardware with it. The way I see it a 64 bit O/S is not really going to benefit you until 8gb ram is fitted.

Vista pisses all over XP in every department. Add Windows Live OneCare and you have the most secure, solid and pretty OS out there.

Right, as my finger is now hovering over the "buy" button...final straw poll - 32 or 64 bit vista for a Q6600 with an 8800GT and 4Gb RAM? I'm thinking 32 bit will suit my purposes as I'm not exactly a multitasking/multimedia whore...I just want something that will make my P90 look spinkee in whatever game I use it in.

Fuck it...32 bit...I just read that by the time 64 bit driver support is mainstream that M$ will have brought out whatever the next incarnation of Windows will be.

There was a change of plan on the chassis front too, so the new spec is:

Shuttle SP35P2 Pro
Intel Core 2 Quad-Core Q6600 G0 SLACR, 95W, S775, 2.40 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 8MB Cache
2 x OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 Vista Performance Gold 2GB Edition
512MB Gigabyte 8800GT PCI-E 2.0 (x16), 1800 MHz, GDDR3, GPU 600 MHz, 2 x Dual Link DVI-I
500 GB Seagate ST3500320AS Barracuda 7200.11, SATA II, 7200 rpm, 32MB Cache, 8.5 ms, NCQ

and of course, Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 32Bit 1Pk OEM (DVD)

Which, by my rough calculations comes in at about 900.

I doubt it'll all arrive before xmas but I can make a start. I won't be robbing too much from my current machine so I can take my time with it.

There's a bottleneck or two in there I'm sure but the bottle will be so fat anyway I don't care.

I plumped for the 32 bit version too. The only minor problem is the 4th GB of RAM is not recognised.

Why can't the industry keep up with eachother? This new rig supports up to 8Gb ffs...but it's next to useless if no fucker actually makes use of it.

The 4GB of Ram is there, it's just not reported in Windows, it uses the ram, just doesn't know it.
