They had a plan

1) Con the dumb fucks into voting for Brexit (sorry, not sorry)
2) Boris for PM
3) Flog off NHS to our mates
4) Turn UK into tax haven
5) Fuck the rest of us

For all the grandstanding I feel very confident May and the EU will strike a deal, albeit with a lot of fudges. It’s just in their nature. The bigger risk is whether May can sell it at home. As I’ve said all along my best guess is that the Brexiters will fold under the threat of an election, but let’s see.

Speaking of grandstanding, Macron’s not pulling his punches:

Quote:
Brexit is the choice of the British people... pushed by those who predicted easy solutions... Those people are liars. They left the next day so they didn’t have to manage it."

I wish i shared your optimism. I fear May will hold on and hold on as she keeps telling herself the EU will fold until it's too late.

It’s never too late though, they’ll just extend if they need to, but the EU always reaches a fudge solution at a minute to midnight.

Ironically the only realistic scenario where May carries on as PM is if the negotiating deadline is extended. They will bury her with the deal but not until its wrapped with a bow on top.

I would assume extension of deadline also requires Parliament to approve by way of an amendment bill given the terms of the EU Withdrawal Act codify the exit date, though I suspect that has far more chance of gliding through Parliament (albeit potentially on support of the opposition) than the current Chequers proposal.

“Those who explain that we can easily live without Europe, that everything is going to be alright, and that it’s going to bring a lot of money home are liars,” said Macron. “It’s even more true since they left the day after so as not to have to deal with it.”

I think they’d probably fudge it. I don’t think anyone in the UK wants civil servants hanging around rural South Armagh.

They've been looking into how to fudge it with technology, but the systems, install and on-going are prohibitively expensive and far from perfect (open to fraud).

If we head towards no deal Brexit, I assume this will play out in stronger and stronger rhetoric from the government before a last minute cave, a peoples vote, and immediately after, a general election?

Or am I being naive?

The people can fuck right off. At this point I'm all for authoritarian rule under the iron fist of Ed Balls.

It was the people that got us into this mess. We just need a PM to say "can't make it work, we're staying, soz lol."

As sensible as that sounds to us, once you roll it out across the country its likely you'll have pandemonium.

What we have always needed (imo) is to make leaving so toxic so awfully bad, and then a referendum on it quickly with no real time for Leave or Remain to campaign.. and then whatever the result execute it.

There's no coming out of this with more than half of the country satisfied in either best case. Likely the botched result will please far less than half. Tragic.

Thatís not a fudge, thatís a delusion (at least I think he short term). A fudge would be to have customs checks away from the border, so itís not a hard border but has a similar effect.

Really hard to see how a Brexit is avoided at this point. It’s almost certain in my view that May will reach a deal with the EU27. I’m very confident that the 40 or so rock solid hard Brexit MPs will then stare over the Jezza / People’s Vote shaped cliff and decide that this is better than nothing, a start to build on and back her.

Also, why there is still talk from some of a People's Vote is beyond me. Ignoring for a moment all the tired arguments for and against holding a second referendum, there's now bugger all time left to hold one.
