BBC to show World Cup in 4K HDR and VR

http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2018/05/the...ll-and-also-vr

I'll be interested to try out the VR side of things on the PS4.

Bump!
I’d forgotten about 4K as well as VR
Just downloading the PS4 app now to watch the rest of the Peru v Denmark game

Would be interested to hear what everyone thinks of the VR experience.

Hmmm, quite a novel way of watching it.
There’s a BBC live stream “TV” top centre that seems sharper than the main behind goals/exec box view. Cleverly done, though just needs a resolution bump to really work properly I think - next gen PSVR maybe.
Found this on YouTube which shows it in action.

Works an absolute treat. Very clever use of not only the event but also the ability to feed in other news video sources. I really like the remote UI, very nice just to "pick it up" and start using it contextually. Tons of potential here for other sports and events. Especially things that happen closer to the 360 camera locations. Tennis, martial arts, diving etc. Non sports such as theatre, concerts. Endless potential. You can see why Facebook tried to steal a march.

I reckon if they bring the next Olympics to this it’ll be fantastic. They already have multiple feeds avaible for various sports at any given time, so to be able to flip to any sport in VR would be awesome.
I’m thinking the cycle velodrome, etc.

Camel toe angle at swimming and gymnastic events. Bound to be a winner.

Watched a couple of games in 4k on iPlayer, and while the picture was brilliant, I thought the colours, especially the kits and pitch, looked a bit washed out compared to the HD?

Natural colour does tend to look a bit washed out compared to TV, but you might contemplate calibrating your TV/display. Any Fox-released DVD, like Star Wars, etc. has a THX optimiser in the extras, the Blu rays don't include it. Worth setting aside some time-and it does take a while-to do that, you should notice a worthwhile difference if you're just on presets, or haven't tinkered much. 🙂

Drop 100 on a high-end HDMI cable to upgrade those 1s and 0s, will improve the vibrancy and really make those colours pack a punch.

Tried the VR today for the Uruguay vs Saudi Arabia game. Quality of the game aside, I thought the VR was fantastic. I found myself watching the pitch far more than the broadcast stream. The picture quality is a little bit pants but it shows the potential for the future.

FIFA have had a load of complaints about their feed in that respect. Not just you. I slummed it in HD last night because the colours were flickering etc.

There's a specific VR app for the wc.
