Newbie Broadband Connection Question

I'm after sourcing a leased line and I've no idea where the best place to start is. BT tell me that the two options are 2Mb and 10Mb full stop. 2 might not be future-proof and 10 is stupid money.

I guess my question is, is this restriction of choice a marketing one or a technical one? If it is the former can I just go to any old ISP and tell them I want 5Mb and they could go and repackage their bandwidth and sell it on to me?

I currently have an "up to" 8Mb ADSL which just isn't up to the job of a lot of outgoing VPN usage, some incoming VPN, email, up to 25 users browsing, a web-based helpdesk system. My last employer had a similar setup (except double the amount of users) on a 2Mb leased line and everything seemed hunky-dory.

Any advice would be welcome!

http://broadband.o2.co.uk/home/packages.jsp

O2 up to 20Meg down / 2.5Meg up unlimited downloads (FUP applies) 22.02/mth or 17.13 for O2 mobile customers, 12 month contract.

BE do similar as they're an O2 company, but 24Meg up, and 3 month contracts, but 24.00/mth

Sorry - I wasn't clear, reading back what I typed. I'm looking for a leased (is this SDSL?) business line with no contention. I don't really know what my options are other than BT?

SDSL = synchronous digital subscriber line i.e same both ways = expensive

I think you're after an MPLS leased line, and not a SDSL product. Bear with me, I know there are other providers such as KPN and AT&T ... but might be stuck with BT in the UK.

Edit although for your purposes ... maybe an SDSL would suffice. But I think they are damn expensive ... possibly in comparison to a MPLS.

http://www.enta.net/Customer_Product.../Leased_Lines/

Enta will do 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 Mb/s ... in fact up to 10Gb/s. What *I think* happens is ... 2Mb/s is one product ... however anything larger up to 10Meg will have a 10Meg circuit put in, but you then pay for a speed cap of say 6Mb/s.

Got 2 x 10Mb/s lines out of our site. Daren't imagine the total cost, especially as our London site have 2x50Mb/s into our cloud!

10Mb from BT was going to cost 20k pa which was too much, but I'd imagine i could swing 500-1000 a month which I'm sure would cover a 4-6Mb line. It's the inbound speeds I'm looking to increase really as we very quickly overload our current connection. Trouble is, none of these websites mention how much it's going to cost

Dunno if this is any help but Eclipse who I'm with do leased lines and 3 types of SDSL aswell. There's a online form to fill out for a quote for the leased one.

We use Thus, they beat BT into small bloodied mess when it comes to pricing, however we do have a number of lan extensions, leased lines, isdn 30's and analogue lines with them so overall we spend a lot.

For a leased line the pricing depends on your location and how accessible it is so any pricing you get over the web won't be that accurate. They will need to come and see you and assess your location, or at the very least know your exact location and then give you an personalised quote.

Cheers all - some great links! We're a bit in the middle of nowhere but we do have a nearby exchange - does that still matter when talking about leased lines?

Depends if they already have some fibre to the exchange, you want an uncontended circuit so they must already have spare capacity at your exchange for it to help.

Worth trying them as they will use a BT tail (which they'll get cheaper) if they can't get their own cable close. Thus do that with our Leeds office.
